Hm, let's see. :D My dad actually gave me Thief3 as a gift because he saw it selling for cheap and bought it just because he thought it suited my personality. Even before playing Thief, I was always really sneaky and liked creeping up on people. So he really didn't make a mistake buying it. :D
I agree that it's the idea of the game - like some of the more gripping fantasy novels, by Anne McCaffrey or Raymond Feist and others - it's a separate world, original, with its own rhythm and heartbeat, its own laws and rules... Yet not so alien that we can't apprehend it. It's... gripping. It's a city of shadows and memories, and secrets within secrets, where every day is an adventure, and where there are prophecies and fate and destiny. It's a city full of magic and mystery, where you would never make the mistake of considering yourself to have learned everything there is to learn.
The games are a portal from our own ordinary world - ordinary because we actually live in it.

For me, one of the unique things about Thief is the SOUND!
It is, to date, the *only* game I have played that one must actually listen to in order to play. With every other game I have played, the sound is just a fun aural reinforcement of what you can instantly tell with your eyes(an exploding robot, a gun going "bang", etc.) Not so with thief: sound is the biggest clue of what you *don't* see.
Playing Thief without sound would be like playing one of those other games with a blindfold on.
Not to mention that the sound can totally creep you out, too. I remember so many times being afraid to move, or desperately casting about for a hiding place because of the approaching footsteps or sinister chittering noises. Ahh, gotta love the glorious SOUNDS! (think of that more as sung than yelled.)
