Okay, I'm going back through the game. There was always one part that really bothered me my first time through. That part where Paul is in the apartment and then the MIBs and such break in and he tells you to run for safety. First time through, that's what I did. Through reading a bunch of FAQs I've learned that a lot of other people did the same. Second time through I stayed and fought. So, I win the battle and Paul runs out of the apartment blabbing about something I forgot already. So, I figured he was saved. Later though, at the battery park ambush, Gunther told me "Paul is already dead". What gives? Is there really any way Paul can live through that? Luckily I have a backup save at that particular scene so I can go back if I've done something wrong. Thanks for the help in advance. (Oh, and I haven't gotten TOO much farther than that point in the game, so please, no big spoilers or anything).

To save Paul you must die in the ton hotel.

Oh really? I'll definitely try that. Actually I did manage to get Gunther to say at the ambush "we plan on bringing you and Paul in alive." I had wasted so much ammo in the fight I loaded up my game and decided to try and conserve some. After that I just couldn't win again. I would quicksave while looking at paul to make sure he was still alive, and he would just dissapear during the fight. I'd load my game again (keep in mind that I ALWAYS made sure that Paul was alive and well in view while saving) so, when I load he just wouldn't be there. He would just constantly dissapear and Gunther would tell me how Paul was dead. Obviously some severe glitches going on there. Thanks for telling me about that though.

Spoiler:
The important thing in saving Paul is to avoid the window. As long as you leave the 'ton by the front door or die in the attempt, Paul should live. I like to make it to Battery Park because of the skill points you get - every little helps. ;) The fight with Gunther has no bearing on this issue, at that point it's all decided already.

PS: You may want to stay away from quicksave - some people have trouble with that.
Paul usually disappears at some stage in the fight when you lose sight of him.

Yeah, I guess that makes sense. I remember always leaving through the back window after the fight except for one time. I guess that was the one time Gunther told me "we plan on taking you and Paul in alive." Rahter than telling me Paul was dead. I've gotten far past that point since then, but I used the dying in the hotel method...Doh.

It's fun to leave with Paul because he's a real badass (read: Invincible). He'll take out everyone in the hotel, and that's a lot of people, while you sit in the corner and conserve ammo. It's hard to keep up with him when he gets to the streets (not quite sure where he eventually goes) because he runs so fast. One time I even saw him take out the patrol bot that was hanging around.

Yeah that's the funny thing. You go to see Paul in his apartment and he's sitting on a chair groaning and saying "I can't make it to the roof, you go on without me" and generally looking as if he's not going to be moving anywhere in a hurry. Then when the MIBs and soldiers burst in he's up and at 'em spraying bullets all over the place. Maybe he'd stashed a vial of zyme somewhere to freshen himself up or something...

that little "plot gap" always bothered me, too. it's like, "well, Paul, if you can run around the hotel and get to Smuggler, WHY can't you go up the frelling ladder?"
but it's ok. i'm willing to "suspend disbelief" a bit here and there for the sake of gameplay.

after doing all that crap with the message, i had a funny feeling something was gonna happen, so i put up some gas 'nades and lams in the hallway outside paul's. the first time, it worked and lotsa guys were dead and all the rest were coughing up somethin nasty. bang bang bang in the head, you. yay, paul, we're free! off to battery park.....you vill not ezcape my big nazty flametoer. the second time, it went something like this: chit chat, chad's safe. "agent paul de-BOOOOOM" they ended their sentence and i forgot what everybody said after that cause i was in awe of what happened. apparently, the programmers put in a branch in the dialog where lams can go off and kill the guards....it was weird....
p.s. sorry about the confusing post. i was real tired....and maybe high...but don't tell my mom
