The logo is already appearing on merchandise, it's done. They have made their decision. Let's discuss more important issues than the logo.

Another example of an in-house artist that didn't get it was the guy who designed the LGS logo.
 Not sure what you meant by this. I think the LGS logo rocks.
I wasn't saying that
all in-house guys are clueless, just that I can see how it could happen.

Oh sorry! I thought you knew! The LGS guys never liked it, and as has been pointed out, the artist (one guy, not all) didn't seem to know what a "looking glass" was. Giving the guy the benefit of the doubt, it could very well have been meant as a pun. There's a thread, or series of posts about it somewhere...
Not a personal opinion but a parallel story about one hand not knowing what the other hand is doing, but in this case, Stephane D'Astous is happy with the new logo.

Ah! (
mailto:TH4@eidosmontreal.com) TH4@eidosmontreal.com then. Good! I remember seeing the TH4 there earlier, but I seem to have overlooked it.
Are we to understand the official abbreviation for now is TH4 rather than T4? Good enough for me. TH4 it is from here on out. I won't even bitch about consistency/continuity/logic or other sillinesses.

...And it is writ in the annals of TTLG that all it took was one word. One word set them upon each other. One word that caused TTLG to destroy itself from within. One word that made them turn their back on their very foundation. One word, and they beheld their armageddon...

I don't believe it was a joke. I think they wanted something with more visual punch than the game's name with a number after it. They wanted to do something that looked like nothing any fan would do, in order to make it clear that this was official. They understood that there was a remarkable level of balance to the Thief logo as it stood, and that adding something after it breaks that balance, so they decided to include the 4 somewhere in the logo, not actually intending it to replace the E, as it would in 1337 speak, but simply filling the space where the E would go. I believe they were successful in all of that. As a graphics design decision, I get why they did it.

Perfect, eh? And it's funny...but also too true.
