Because, as has been mentioned elsewhere, it's the one piece of insight into the people who are handling the project. And if they can screw up the logo that badly, it doesn't imply good things for the game itself. Also, no-one at EM has used the word "joke", although I wouldn't be surprised if they do in the next few days, as a bit of hasty backtracking.

didn't screw up the logo badly. It's the classic Thief logo. It doesn't have a hot-pink outline with flowers.

a) They actually thought it was a good idea, and would appeal to Thief fans, to replace a letter with a number, 1337-style.
b) They didn't even replace the right letter with the right number; 4=a, not e, hence all the THIAF lolz posts
c) They thought so highly of this terrible excuse for a logo that they announce the game with it, and give us nothing else!
