I've seen mention of Thief Gold, Thief Platinum etc.. What do I have?
I've just bought Thief I & II DVD version (it installs without problems onto XP).
1. Am I right in assuming I've the standard T1 & 2, just on DVD instead of CD?
2. Am I right in assuming I won't need to download patches?
3. Was this the right forum for these questions?

This is the correct forum.
I've never heard of a Thief release on DVD! Where did you find it?
Check Thief.exe and Thief2.exe for the product version number. You want to see 1.33/T1 and 1.18/T2. if that's the case you are good. Right click----> properties------> version-----> product version
If you have Thief gold it will say gold on the load screen....it's version 1.37 and needs no patch as well.
Check the FAQ thread for more details.

The DVD in question is this one - it's a fairly common european rerelease. It is indeed Thief: The Dark Project and not Thief Gold (more's the pity).
I can't speak as to the version numbers but follow Slyfoxx's advice. If it turns out you have older versions then you can download the appropriate patches from The Circle. I have no idea what the T2 "Premier" version is and the page really should have clarified better with an explicit version number, but it's probably not the version you have so try the regular T2 patch.

The Premier Edition is a version of Thief 2 released under the Eidos Premier Edition brand. It differs in no way from the regular edition of Thief 2 other than altered copy protection which causes an 'Incorrect CD inserted' message when the regular patch is applied. It even has the same version number.

Aha! Could you put a clarification to that effect on the download page as well? Along with whether you have to reinstall if you applied the wrong patch?

Bought it from ebayUK for less than $5 - who could resist?
I looked as you suggested: there was a Thief.exe but not a Thief2.exe file.
Thief.exe listed product version as 1.33 (not 133/T1 - but that's probably related to the fact there's no Thief2.exe), so it looked good.
Then I saw a text file titled 'thiefpat' (AHA!) which I opened. It made it clear the game was patched - referred to it now supporting EAX and joystick. It then went on to give tips on how to cheat (but I didn't read that in order to avoid temptation!)
(PS There was also a file called 'patchlog' - but I couldn't open it (properties listed the file type as .... file! As I don't know what I'm doing, it seemed safer to leave it alone.)
So, I'm patched!
MANY THANKS.
Now all I have to do is learn how to play PC games without getting crippling cramp in my 'mousehand' after 30 minutes play!

1.33 is what you should have seen. I just typed 1.33/T1 1.18/T2 as an abbreviation. You found no Thief2.exe because you were looking at Thief 1. Thief2.exe is on the Thief 2 disc!;)

Oh dear! I can be very dim sometimes! Thanks again.

Didn't know about it, so no, it hadn't occurred to me. THANKS.
