Hi everybody.
My very first post, but i has been wandering around since years ago.
I am a very hardcore fan of the thief series and gaming in general.
Since my brand new 8800GTX can´t handle thief, and my old pc can barely handle it, i decide to build a thief dedicated machine.
A friend of mine is about to sell me a fx5950 ultra agp and i need advice.
As far as i know since geforce 6200 and up people have issues with bad sky, some choppy textures and issues with drivers.
So, do you guys thinks i will have issues with this card ?
Can i use the latest drivers with this card ? or i just need to use a older driver.
Since this machine will be "thief dedicated" i dont need any more advanced card since i already have a gaming rig for everything else.
Thanks in advance for your advice.

The Geforce 5x00 series didn't have any of the rendering problems that plague the Geforce6 and up; I ran the games quite happily on an FX5700, with a variety of different driver versions, though it's probably a good idea to stick to a driver version that's around the same age as the card itself.

Thank you !
I'll Purchase the card then.
Since that issue is solved, i also have another thing to ask:
What about a standard pci version of the FX 5500 that i saw on sale.
My old pc specs:
xp sp2
P3 1000 mhz
400 gb hds
1 gb ram
voodoo 5 5500 pci version 64 mb
sb audigy
20.1 samsumg syncmaster lcd 4:3 ratio
- no agp slot -
This is my first pc since 2001 and just days ago i did upgrade to a hardcore gaming rig.
The problem with the old pc i think is the old gpu.
Do you think i could play thief 1 & 2 in that machine if i buy the fx 5500 256 pci version as well ?

Are you sure about that? I was having the banded sky and no-stars problems as far back as the GeForce 4.

Interesting ZB, because I'm running a GF4 right now after the GF5 blew up, and it doesn't have transparency problems (shitty sky/TGA textures) either. No stars, of course, but I don't think those have worked on the standard missions since the Geforce 2.

Well, i am using voodoolizer moded drivers because the default drivers sucks and the amigamerlin r11 don't allow me play counter strike condition zero for opengl issues.
I'll check the site you said.

I can run Thief 2 on my Geforece 6600GT/Windows 2000 it runs fine. I wonder if there is another issue.
The anisotropic filtering makes the distance rendering look nice.
