I'm back after a long time, and have re-installed Thief 1 onto my current computer.
Even after reading the stickied thread and downloading the patch/fix mentioned therein I still cannot play the game with Hardware mode on.
Is there anything else to try? Using software 3D rendering looks terrible.
The card is using driver version 6.14.10.9371, if that matters.
EDIT: Heh. "You last visited: 14th Nov 2002 at 03:04" Glad something was keeping track!

You might want to try DDFIX:
(make a backup of the .exe first!)

The problem with old games is that they try to ask the graphics card to do things that modern cards just don't support. This program seems to translate* the requests into the modern equivalents.
*is only guessing

best be visiting more often son:ebil:
try rolling back the drivers a few years if possible. This fixed the issues I was having with my 5200 FX Geforce...I think I'm on 2004 drivers or something

Ah, this eventually worked.
For the sake of completeness, new NVIDIA drivers are here:

The archived WinXP NVIDIA drivers are here:

Version 56.64 (March 15, 2004) works great.

Older drivers did not! Be careful trying those with a GeForce FX card! You will at the very least waste time, and might have other problems.
The "texture fix patch" mentioned in the stickied thread was still necessary. Here is the link for the 1.33 version.

New question: I keep reading that one of the patches I have used disables the CD check. I still have an active CD check, which is not a real problem but is slightly annoying since my CD drive is old and really, really loud.
It seemed the 1.33 patch turned it off iff I used DarkLoader, but the "texture error fix" patch turns it back on no matter how I load the game. Is that the final result?
