Thief 1. Do you like wandering not knowing where to go? - by kage61

if you don't like wandering around, i suggest you take another game, because thief is all about wandering and sneaking around.
I myself spent a pretty while in Lord Bafford's mannor, cause you can really get lost in there, but in cragleshaft it was a little bit easyer there (maybe because there i really used map unlike bafford :cheeky:).

While I agree with what has generally been said here, I do think kage61 has a point, especially in regards to some fms. I remember one fm (although I can't quite remember which) that made me run in circles for hours, as I needed to locate the code for a combo lock. In the end, I KOd all of the enemies of the area (which was huge and repetitive), and I still couldn't find the code. I finally gave up this one, and I'm not ready to try it again soon. I think this happends when a funnel-like gameplay passage occurs, forcing the player to pass a certain point... What I like about thief games is the openness...

I just think it would be cool to have some sort of beacon that always tells you where you need to go, to eliminate all that needless wandering. What do you guys think?
I personally think you're missing the point gaming. :p What you're suggesting is what I hate about modern gaming....having my hand held. If I am playing a game, I want to get lost in the game world. What you're suggesting is like having someone stand over your shoulder while you're playing chess and continuously telling you where to move next! Both gamers and developers are getting further and further away from making interactive 'gaming' and are now simply making interactive 'entertainment'...huge difference, and I wish we were still seeing the former being made.

So I can use the compass and that map to try to navigate a little better?
Don't ever go into the woods alone friend!

Exactly. Exploring and getting your bearings is part of the appeal. If you don't like that sort of thing, you will not like Thief; that simple.

My two favourite missions from Thief are Down in the Bonehoard and The Sword, both of which are vertiable mazes to "get lost" in. Extremely satisfying experiences.

Getting lost in The Sword was one of the best things ever. :thumb:

The Sword my favourite too ;) and Bonehoard certainly.

I'm at bonehoard now. got my guts together and played it, till a little while ago dad came and i'm stuck without playing it for about 3-4 hours (by then it'll be past midnight...SCARY!) I got to the chambers of zombies and houses (past the stinkin' lizzards... undetected, except the 1 i had to kill... funny creatures lol)
The thing i hate about Thief missions is the need to get to the place you started and not escape through another way...seems like Bonehoard is no exception :/

there's a shortcut exit in the bonehoard ;) Get the mystic's soul last of all...

That is half the fun in Thief, exploring! nicked is right, there is another exit in the Bonehoard. Those lizards things are Burricks.
