I've been playing for like 10 minutes and already i'm feeling sick from the head-bob, it's like Quake 1 all over again.

i don't have an answer your question, but i'd urge you to stick with it for a while and give it a chance (at least for more than 10 minutes). don't impose impressions formed by other games on thief just yet.
i've found the player movement in the Thief games (headbob, speed, etc.) to be the best in any game. i've heard the complaint that "my field of vision doesn't bounce up and down when i walk so i don't want it in my FPS games," but for me, the thief headbob is not about simulating the visual as it is about providing the "feel" of having a body. some headbobs are simply a swaying back and forth, which i've always considered rather useless, but the dark engine headbob recreates the "feel" of moving on foot, by accentuating the footfalls, very well. and in thief, the interaction between Garret's feet and the floor is crucial.
simply put, floating around like a disconnected head, for me, would undermine one of the designers' great, albeit subtle, accomplishments -- the creation of the sense that there is a tactile element of the game.
now, the drunken lurching of Deadly Shadows, that's another matter entirely, as far as i'm concerned. :sly:

You can't do anything about it.

I can't imagine anyone having a problem with Thief's headbob. It's so subtle it's practically nonexistent.
Try playing Deadly Shadows for an hour, then go back to Thief Gold. That should cure ya.

The side effects of that remedy can be difficult to bear.

How do people even notice head-bob in games in the first place? Or do they walk round IRL with their heads in a neck brace or something?
Luthien on 21/6/2006 at 21:56
Wow, that's the most stupid, brainless reply I've read in a long time.

Consider the source.

Some people just seem to be more sensitive to it than others. My daughter liked Thief and really tried to play but she ended up nauseous every time so gave it up finally. It's never bothered me or my husband at all.

The entire family playing Thief? That's nice. I convinced my girlfriend to give a try to Thief TDP, but due to the "sadness" of the game she gave up at the Bonehoard level :nono:  Then I let her play Shalebridge Cradle, but she got scared the hell out of her once in the building... at least she was curious enough to see me continue her game. :nono:
