Looking Glass didn't make Deus Ex. I imagine the cutscene is referring to the actual term Deus Ex Machina, which is given a frightening new definition halfway through Thief 1!

Warren Spector pretty much started Deus Ex because of getting frustrated while working on Thief, iirc.
