ok i have found a way to get thief 1 to work on XP with Nvidia cards using 9X.XX drivers. There is a down side its looks total crap 8bit graphics :( but it works. and only goes upto like 800*640 res or what ever it is.
Ok you need to go into your C:\WINDOWS\system32 and then find something called DXDIAG and double click thisand when the box opens up goto Display and disable Direct3D Acceleration and thats it, it worked for me but it looked very bad. Also you will have to turn this back on to play any other games.
Give it a try you may find you are ok with the look.

This isn't a workaround, it is using the game's built in software renderer.
The same thing can be accomplished from the game's own options menu, however this will naturally only affect Thief rather than your entire system.

There's also an easier way to run dxdiag. Click 'start', 'run', and then type dxdiag in the box. Zip, zap, zoop.

LS = this only effect's 9x.xx drivers under XP, under Vista T1 runs fine on the latest drivers. Shame vista is crap in every other regard..
