Thief 1 or 2 will not work for me... - by FishBreath

I decided to get the old games out as I had a random craving for playing Thief while watching some crappy sitcom.
According to my memory, I'm almost CERTAIN that at least Thief 2 worked on my computer before, but now neither of them will work.
They both do the same thing! I will run the game, the screen will go black. And then it gives that useless "Send error report to Microsoft" message.
Now my computer isn't rubbish enough to not be able to play these old games, I played Half Life 2 very smoothly the other week.
God bless any of you who can get me playing my Thieveses tonights. :ebil:

I read it, but I found nothing that would help. The only stuff I found in that to do with XP-related issues is installing it. They both installed fine for me, it's just when I load either game up. Black screen, stupid error message, back to desktop.
I'll try running setup with that lgntforce thing though, I guess it can't hurt to try.

My technical expertise stops here, i only ever had problems with a dual core processor but it doesn't sound like that's your problem. And since giving bad technical advice can make things worse :eww: i shant say a thing.

Hehe, well thanks anyways.
Anyone else? Surely to GOD there's someone else with the same problem as me out there...

Have you tried the <a href="http://www.ttlg.com/forums/showthread.php?t=75031#texturememory">safe_texture_manager fix explained in the FAQ</a>?
Failing that, at what point does the game die? Before you reach the menus? In the menus? When you start a new game?
FishBreath on 2/2/2007 at 19:58
Tried that - no change.
The games (both 1 and 2) both die when I run them. The screen goes black, like any other game would, but then the error report comes and it goes back to the desktop. No intro movies or menus or anything!

I'm pretty sure you have already tried re-installing from the CD but that helped when I had the same problem. Behind that point I'm afraid I'm no help, the Builder bless your attempts.

You had the same problem?
I'm sure it isn't the CD, like I said, this is happening with both games.
And I've tried reinstalling at least 3 times now.

Yep, I had the same problem when I decided to play through Thief 1 again some time ago. As said before the CD might have just been a bit dirty or whatsoever. Re-installing fixed it for me.
