Thief 1 or 2 will not work for me... - by FishBreath

Ok, next guess: it's the indeo movie codec. This is installed with Thief but it's old, Windows XP doesn't like it very much and it gets screwed up easily. Normally that just means your movies stop playing and are instead skipped, but since the movies are the first thing the game tries to show, it could be this the source of the problem.
You can try following one of the suggestions in this entry in the FAQ to fix it.

Well I tried a couple of the solutions for the Indeo thing. But that didn't work.
I also tried removing the MOVIES folder in the Thief2 directory, assuming it'd just skip the movie and go to the menu. Same thing happened.
Is that the wrong way to skip movies? Is there some command to do that?
Also, I read somewhere that someone with the same problem as me could run in Software mode. How do I get this?

Software mode only works for Thief 1.
How about your video card drivers? When you reformatted, did you install the official drivers for your video card, or just use the windows xp default drivers?
Also, make sure you have the correct sound card drivers installed. I've had crashes with Thief due to the sound card drivers not being properly installed.

what about your mobo's processor? what are you running?
FishBreath on 2/2/2007 at 23:45
Well, I just installed the latest Catalyst driver (from ATI website) there and the problem remains.
And, unless I'm reading the wrong thing, my processor is an AMD Athlon 64
2GHz, 512MB ram.
Oh, and could you maybe help me update my sound drivers? I'm not really sure how to go about doing that...I don't know what drivers to get, what I have right now, etc...

Is it a brand name computer, or one that was built? If it's brand name, you should be able to find out what type of sound card you have from the documentation. I don't know for sure, but do the 64 bit processors have any issues with the original Thief games?

I too was having this problem recently, fishbreath. The error message i was getting was related to lgvid.ax file located in the thief gold folder. I later figured it out that it was bcos of FFDShow filter that i had installed. Have u installed ffdshow in ur pc ? If so then do this to ensure that ffdshow does not interfere with Thief.
Start -> Programs -> FFdshow -> Video decoder configuration.
In the dialog box that appears, select 'Info & Debug' option (from the left column menus). In the right side column, u will find a tab saying 'Dont use ffdshow in' alongwith a checkbox & some entries in it like explorer.exe;oblivion.exe;....Just add THIEF.exe; at the end of those entries. It means ffdshow shud not interfere during Thief's execution. Hope this works for u if ffdshow is installed in ur system.

I've very recently seen this problem on a new machine, but there was an error message referring to Avi Chunk Viewer. The cure was to uninstall Avi Splitter.
