Somehow I'm not fond of thief 1/gold. I don't like the magical aspect of the game, at least half of it is about paganic creatures, mages and undead, not my cup of tea. I do like its atmosphere though.
Even though thief 2 isn't perfect, I prefer it by far simply because it mostly focus on a normal/human environment, which is the best setting for stealth gameplay to me. Furthermore, it has a much better attention to detail and I just love the quasi steampunk artdeco look of it. :p

Leaving the original video quality of Thief1 aside, it was the best game for sure.
I love the strong pagan aspects and language (unfortunately availlable only in the english version, though), and its unique creatures.
And the immersion into the game and the story is unmatched here.
The war-bots in T2 always bothered me but finally I got used to them.
You could hear them coming from a mile distance already and don't fit into the game at all.
It would have been better to make more use of the spider-bots instead, which are much sneakier then those 'elephants on stampede'

Yes I totally agree with you:cheeky: I love the cutscenes in thief 1, because they just have so much more to them than the thief 2 cutscenes. I also think the magic and weird feeling the trickster creatures gave me. The feeling of thief 2 is too dull because its just filled with too much machinery, and you know what I mean how theres too many robots and mechanical stuff.

TDP/Gold will always hold a special place in my heart. I guess I have a bias toward TDP/Gold. Personal note pondering T1: things change. I wonder how well I'll like it now after having not played through TDP or Gold in many years. Really need to get through it again!
I loved TDP/Gold because of the medieval-ish style, the variety in enemies and levels, atmosphere, etc. While a lot of people seem to hate the more magical aspects of the game and are looking for a more focused sneaky kind of game (ala Thief 2), none of this bothered me personally. Then again, I started playing Dark Project when I was just turning into a teenager and that was what I started with in the series having been used to games that did not focus on stealth at all. Thief 2 came later for me and had better visuals and nice large areas to sneak around in.
I think if we're arguing which game had the better stealth to it, Thief 2 would win because it was more focused on that and removed or lessened some of the TDP/Gold elements.
Also, I think I agree with the thought that The Lost City was better before adding the mages. Doing that in TG just made the level feel so different and less... I don't know, creepy and mysterious? I guess it's because you've got human enemies around rather than creatures like the craybeasts which changed how you felt about the level and your experience. Having said that, I like the idea of the mages, just perhaps they could have had their own mission that didn't change the feel of an original mission.
It's funny how things change though, because I think nostalgia really plays a large part in why TDP is more well regarded in some ways. The gritty look to it, the simpler lighting... but Thief 2 introduced colored lighting and after seeing Bafford's Manor in the Thief 2 version of the Dark Engine it is quite a sight to behold. Colored lighting just adds so much to it. I guess in the past few years I've grown to expect better visuals since I've played games that have far advanced past our beloved Thief series. What's great about these games though is the passionate fans that have taken upon themselves the task to extend and enhance the life of the series.
There's one thing that I can still say though, except for the dithering effect that occurs in the Dark engine before patches:
these games for me have aged rather well, at least in terms of music, atmosphere, and to a lesser extent, textures. (I've really been spoiled by higher resolution textures now.) One exception to that is TDP's AI models. They're very low poly and don't hold up that well anymore. I guess my point is in all this rambling on is that I can still go back to these and play them despite their age. Oh, and that each game has it's strengths and weaknesses I guess. I think they sort of compliment each other. They're both thief games, but they offer quite different experiences which to me is great.
Oh, and I really hate the mechanists. Funny because despite the hammerites being somewhat fanatical themselves, I sympathize with them a bit and like them more.
Err, sorry, kinda rambled on a bit there.

T2>T1>TG
Thief 2 captured some of the best moments in the series and it was thematically more consistent than the first game. It also opened up the city a bit more than the first one -- we got more insight into the politics and the lives of its inhabitants.
Thief 1 had a better story than the sequel and gave more insight into the history and mythology of the city.
I did not like the changes in Thief Gold all that much. One thing I really liked was the opera house level. The Little Big World was fun as well. Thieves' Guild was horrible, Mage Towers pretty bland, and I utterly despised the fire shadows in Bonehoard. I also think I preferred TDP's Lost City.

Actually, the FireShadows are there to give you with firecrystal if you used all of it to proceed.
Because in hard and expert you must take the stone by unlighting all torches and in all difficulties the statue in the Haunted Cathedral.
They are there for the gameplay.
I reconize that only the opera house in TG is well-done, thieves guild is impossible to ghost and the mage tower is too hard (especially the fire tower).
Fortunately, there are the cool new skins and textures to calm us down! ^^

I know why the fire shadows were put there. I just don't like them. A fire arrow dispenser would've been better.

I like the technological enhancements that Thief 2 brought to the Dark Engine, but when it comes to OMs and story I prefer Thief 1.
