Well, having finished up T: DS recently, and having played through T: MA last year, I thought maybe I'd give Thief 1 another whirl.
The last time I played it was.... many years ago, probably about when it first came out. My copy is long lost. I saw it in a store recently (!) and was about to pick it up, but thought I'd ask your fine folks opinion: Should I go for the original flavor (which is what they had), or Gold?
And if you'd like to cite a reason for your reccomendation, that'd be appreciated (but I won't force ya!). I'm not really sure what the differences are to begin with.

Check the faq, it's got all the answers you need. Essencially Gold is Thief 1 but with improvements to existing missions and three new levels. Now personally I started out with Thief Gold so I couldn't tell ya what these improvements or extra missions are, so i'm afraid one of the other members will have to help you there. As far as patching the game goes Thief Gold is already at the highest version it can go. Thief 1 however, comes as either patched or unpatched depending on which one you get. (also covered in the faq) So I guess my reccomendation would have to be Thief Gold, it's all in one package, little to no patching(maybe a few tweaks to get it working on modern comps), and extra missios. Oh yeah I forgot, there are quite a few goodies bundled with Thief Gold, a making of Thief 2 movie, a desktop theme (only works with windows 98 as far as I know), and Dromed the Thief SDK.

The extra three missions in Thief Gold are integrated into the game, not just tacked on the end or something, so it's really the complete package and the best way to go. There are very few changes made to original levels.

I just think that Lost City was better in TDP.

You've aroused my curiousity; what do you like better about it?

They changed a few of the AI is about the only change, other than one other large spoilerific change that has to do with the new missions (they took something from Lost City and it's now in a new mission)
Most people don't like the change in AI, but I'm fine with it. I think it's mostly a matter of everyone just attached to the "first" way it was. But I can see other reasons too, as the change makes you a little less alone in the long lost place

Yes, that.

I say get both, they're rather cheap these days!
One can never have too many thief games.....

I know from the FAQ that Gold has some extra levels and "improvements", but I don't know what those improvements are... I'm curious about the AI; is it possible to describe what changed about it, or is it just "different"?
