TDP > TDS > Tgold > TMA.
Because of RTC. Because of the haunts. Because of the Eye.
Ahh yes, I remember the first time I was upstairs on the right side of RTC by that bell. The sound it made was creepy (windbell.wav). There was also the room by the bell with the twisted voices. "Can you hear me?".
I've always loved that low wind sound that you hear as an ambiance in RTC and the upstairs portions of The Sword. I'm not sure if that is in T2, but it sounded better than any of the wind sounds in TDS. I don't know the file name to point out though.

Here's another reason why I prefer T1/G: The dialogue and lines of the characters are more natural and realistic than in T2.
In Thief 2 the dialogue seems acted, and sometimes downright silly (in a bad way). Even the way the guards scream seems kinda forced, compared to T1.

Rare opinions, there.
Anyhow, the T2 guards share the same alarm/combat/death/alertness files as the T1 guards--except for the addition of two female voice sets, and the Mechanist-specific files.

Actually no. There's 2 new guard voices, and the old ones that remained got voice parts that were changed, including screams, etc., that just don't tickle my fancy. Open up your snd.crf files and play the guard ones, you'll find differences between 1 and 2. "Have some of this!",
"One peep out of you and that's it! ", "
Turn around veerry slowly, and...put your hands on yer head! " (Benny version),
"We'll show him who's in charge here! Let's get 'im!"
There you go, a few of the many guard lines only in T2

There is also a common guard schema which is TDP-exclusive - the one that has "Come out of the shadows, tricksie-boy, I see ya." (or something to that effect). That was almost completely rewritten for TMA. I put him back in Disorientation, BTW.
In general, sound design was better in TDP - the ambients, are more mysterious, and may be better suited for the game's sound engine. The various tones at Bafford's, or the music that plays in crypts, or that bell sound in RTC - they just have something. But then design-wise, I think Calendra's Legacy is approximately how T2 should have looked, played and sounded. :)

Absolutely. The Bafford soundtrack was brilliant, and Calendra's Legacy definitely hit the spot (not only in sound, but on all levels).

The mood engendered by the use of the bare essential elements of architecture, city scapes and the film noir feeling make, and made TDP a much better adventure than any of the sequels.
TMA and Gold, were not failures, but lost some of that "gritty" earthy quality making them a little less WOW - tinged with terror - and a little more sleek eyecandy.
T3 was a dis asst her.
Fortunately some of the FM makers have captured that raw feeling in mood and temperment. Some have introduced new elements that, while not canon, still hold to the original feeling of Garrett's world and times faithfully.
And, to give credit where it is due, many of the FMs, single missions that they generally are, are far superior in plot and mood, than TMA managed to reach, and T3 completely destroyed.

I tend to like T2 more because I didn't like all the monster-themed missions of TDP. But I think that the Hammerites in TDP were much better, in behaviour and speech. I know what you mean about them turning to face you. It actually felt that they were looking down upon you, and they were about to judge you. I wish T2 had a Hammer mission.

i'm glad to see that there are so many people that share same opinion and feeling toward T1. i was getting sick of seeing how people praise T2 over T1when it doesn't deserve it.
