Flying... but this is still possible to do in Thief 2 demo - impossible to do in Thief 2.

As fun as exploiting bunny-hopping is, it's really a broken mess. So long as you have a long enough run-way, and use just the jump key (no running keys), you eventually gain so much speed that you die thanks to the falling damage taking overall velocity into account and not just the Z-axis (I think).
That said, I like 1 better than 2 as well, for many reasons already mentioned by others. I liked the atmosphere better, I actually liked avoiding zombies and burricks (call me crazy), I liked abandoned tombs more than Victorian establishements, etc.
If we're going to compare Karras's voice to anything, might Droopy Dog be a more apt comparison? :P

Surely not. Surely if you search the archives you won't find dozens of people over the last thirteen years making the exact same observation.

I do remember a couple of people mentioning that, and it's very close indeed. I had picked Aleister Crowley:

My first contact with Thief was the Bafford job demo. Then, years later, I picked up Thief 2. It is a sweetheart of mine since then, circa 2000. Years later, I picked up Thief ONE. Got to Lost City mission and quite. Boy... what was that? actually, what is this? It felt little like the Thief I visioned and held at heart, and, thinking in retrospect, felt more like I was playing a rogue in Dungeon and Dragons.
Aged, I see the attitude of stealth PLUS exploration, but... not enough for me to give it another go today. I may play FMs in the theme, but you can say I "reject" the original.
This is more of a rant than a logical argument in gameplay technicality, but Thief 1, not Gold for I have never played it, aside from canon holds very little in me.

I always thought Thief1 had a more lovecraftian feel, whereas Thief2 was more steampunk. I prefer Thief1, myself. Thief1 > Thief2 > Thief3
Thief1 had waaaay better sound design in terms of Ambients.

Despite all of the above, T2 is still my favorite. But there are plenty of things in Thief 1 that were done really well. A few that come to mind:
- The undead horde in "Return To The Cathedral" - getting around in the cloisters was pretty darn scary. Also, the ghost of Brother Murus is a weirdo. I like that guy.
- "Escape" was mighty challenging. I don't think anything in T2 was quite as tough.
- Burricks in the flesh. "You'll be down there... rubbin' their tummies..." Though, I do like the conversation at the beginning of T2 "Kidnap" about "poor brother Cavador".
- The minor characters stick with me. "Felix went after the Horn of Quintus... down the bonehoard." I really like Cutty despite spending only about 20 secs of quality time together. Not true of Sammy, or Lotus, or even Lt. Mosley. They're flatter characters, somehow.
- Leaps of faith down wells. I dig it. "I'm going to take the plunge!"
- The Downwinders and the guards at Ramirez's place were fun - the criminal underground didn't get too much attention in T2. The housebreakers in "Life of the Party" were fun, but that's all I can think of right now.
(First post in TTLG, btw. Hey there.)

I agree with everything was said. Thief 1 has this occult, surrealistic, dark fairytale style. The ambient music adds a lot to it and is an essential part of the whole. I like it much more than Thief 2.
T2 has some great levels and missions, but what I really can't stand is the whole techno stuff. Mechanicsts, robots, annoying Karras voice. I never liked the Mechanist interior design either. I accept this stuff as part of the stories progress, but I don't like that.
