I think it'd be great to have a thread dedicated to gaming tips and tricks in Thief. I remember when I was first playing the game(s), there were so many things I had no idea existed. But even now, I keep noticing more and more little tricks that can make so much difference when playing a difficult mission on expert, and I'd love to discover more of these since I'm sure there are still many that I'm not aware of.
So without further ado, I'd like to encourage everybody to share their knowledge of how to play the game. There aren't really any limits, it can range from what kind of weapons to use (and how to use them) on particular enemies to how to effectively scale walls or do platforming and even how to exploit certain shortcomings of the game.
PS. I tried searching the forums first but couldn't find any threads of this type, hope I didn't miss something :)

Thanks for these! I recently found out about the door blackjack but haven't tried it yet. I recall often getting hit by AI through doors though.
Also interesting styles there Goldmoon Dawn, I should try some of these at some point.
Recently I heard about how you can get off a ledge/floor onto a lower floor with lower chances of hurting yourself, when you crouch and tiptoe to the edge until you end up in a narrow recess from which you then skid off. Again, haven't tried myself but that's something that could be very helpful.

on fall damage you can lessen it ,but it depends on how high you are, most of the time i do this
i look for a sign or lamp to land on on land on a patrolling guys head and with some luck you can land behind him and not be seen and take no damagei been on thief since 1998 demo's,i think i know all the tricks now, only trick i never used is the
one where you can bind a item and use it to lift yourself out of any situation

Obviously, other than the usual game play styles, Azal did a wonderful service to the community with his (
http://www.thief-thecircle.com/guides/unusual/) Strange And Unusual. It is an absolute must for any serious Taffer.
Actually, the original is by Thumper (the one you linked to), and it covers The Dark Project. Azal did one for Thief 2, it can be found (
http://thief.nov.ru/azal/) here.

i am going to name my style of play "airing it out" that means you knock everyone possible person out, loot all item but dont use any that means food and items not needed to complete mission, make sure all doors are open,to show you been there/exclude doors that automatically close, and complete all objectives on expert

A thing to note about doors.
When they are closed the door handling script adds an opaque flat plate inside the door which extends into the walls around the door so there are no gaps through which you can be seen.
Open the door even a tiny bit, say by standing behind it and frobbing, and this flat plate is removed, effectively making the door transparent to the AI, you however still can't see through it, so the AI can become alerted even though you can't see them because you are effectively standing in the middle of an open doorway.
You can't normally see this flat plate as it's centred within the door but if you wake up dromed and make a door floating in space you can see the plate appear and disappear when you frob the door.
AI vision is different to yours, a lot of the objects are invisible to them, so hiding behind a bush or a table just means you are crouching in plain sight

One idea is the very simple "No alerts" style. No idea if it has an official name as such, but if not, then call it "The Phantom Menace" style.
Not an official "ghost" style as you can kill or KO enemies if you want, just as long as they never see it coming. And no-one else sees the body afterwards. And no alarms are set off, and so on.
