Thief 1.33, NVIDIA 7300 GT, and Windows 7 x64. No known issues so far. - by TheKeeper

Hello everyone.
As hard as it is for me to believe, Thief 1.33 is running without any known issues. It's been years since I've played the game in its entirety so I'm extremely happy about this.
As difficult as it was to get this game running on Windows XP 32-bit, the ease of getting it to run on Windows 7 is pretty astonishing. All that I did was install it and disable a processor in the affinity dialog in the task manager. So far, no issues at all. Initially, I used the latest driver from the NVIDIA website but then switched to the one provided via Windows update. Still no issues that I know of.
I'm also playing System Shock 2 as well. Again, I just installed it and disabled a processor in the affinity dialog. I still have to test Thief Gold and Thief 2.
When I tried to run Thief under Windows xp 32-bit, I used that patched binary for those using NVIDIA cards. To get it to work, I renamed it to Thief.exe and disabled a processor. It still ran too fast and I had to start it in software mode. Once I did that, I would load the training level and switch to hardware mode. From there, I would restart the training level and it would run normally. At this point, I would load a saved game for the first mission. I would have to do this each time I played it.
I hope this helps someone because I am a very happy man right now. :cheeky:

And it can be even easier. There are some patch programs available that can fix all your hardware issues, plus give you the option of installing graphical enhancements to the game. For Thief 1/Gold, check out Tfix. For Thief 2, it's Tafferpatcher. Both program are available in threads stickied at the top of this forum.
Both of these patch programs also install New Dark, a new updated version of the Thief program that was created (presumably) using leaked source code and released anonymously to the community last year.

I tried New Dark but did not like it. It is apparent that there are changes to core gameplay mechanics. Not sure if these are bugs or changes made. Whenever the player is in the shadows, the gem is fullbright. This and the hypersensitive AI took the fun out of New Dark. I mean it was like you could not even sneak without alerting the AI. I'm grateful for the work these people are doing, but I wanted to play Thief as it was back then.
Regardless, I'm just happy the game runs though I'm not sure why it does. :cheeky:

Something isn't right there, that's not how it's supposed to be. How did you install New Dark? Whatever you did, you should probably try again. Either way, I think in the worst case scenario you can still use Tafferpatcher and simply choose not to install New Dark (but still install other patches like the multicore fix, etc.) if that's what you want to do. But trust me, with New Dark installed properly, the good is going to far outweigh the bad. What resolution are you running Thief in?

Wait, are you sure you downloaded just NewDark, or did you try TFIX? Sounds to me like this is due to TFIX. After all, I've read that voodoo47 has made changes to how Thief 1/gold work, such as making it so that AI don't go "oomph!" while laying in a fire. I'd recommend checking all relevant docs.

I think Thief 1.33 allowed a maximum of 1024 x768 via the game menu which is what I believe I'm running. My install is completely stock which is why I'm so elated. Thief was never really about graphical quality for me so I'm not too concerned about visual fx or anything like that. Currently, Thief runs fine. No timing issues or unstable behavior. I literally have played it for a couple hours at a time.

Have you got any fine screenshot (just because of the quality the VGA card gives) :) thank you

Are you asking for a screenshot of Thief that I have installed now? It's vanilla Thief 1.33. I'm not using any patches or fixes. All that I did was disable a processor in the affinity dialog. Also, just for the record, I'm using Windows 7 Professional x64. I can also post machine specification upon request.
Here you go:

**EDIT**
If you meant an install of Thief with New Dark, I would have to install another copy of Thief and then take some screen shots.

I think it was the bundle that had everything. The changes were pretty obvious. I generally use the same routine to complete Bafford's and know what to expect on the easiest level. I sneak around and approach from the rafters near the throne room. The guard is aware but not hyper aware. I knock out each of the torches and then jump down and knock him out. With New Dark, I could not do that.

Without knowing EXACTLY what it is you downloaded and how you installed the game, I can't be sure but I don't think you can blame New Dark. I could be quite wrong though. I don't recall if the NewDark zip includes a dark.cfg, but that's where the AI changes would come from. I'm not sure it's advisable, but you could restore your original dark.cfg if this is the case.
The main benefits of NewDark are higher resolution support, audio fixes/updates (like OpenAL available for example), no more resolution switching between game and menu, ability to play in windowed mode, no need for multi-core fixes, etc. But, if Thief works fine for you and you're okay with running the game at 1024x768 for example, then "to each his own." And to be honest, personally, after what I've heard that has been done to thief 1/gold with TFIX I'm happy to stay with a non-NewDark version of Thief Gold myself.
