Thief 1.33, NVIDIA 7300 GT, and Windows 7 x64. No known issues so far. - by TheKeeper

the weird stuff with lights and torches is caused by using an old save. restart the mission and it will be fine.
also, see the final note in the TFix topic.

Without knowing EXACTLY what it is you downloaded and how you installed the game, I can't be sure but I don't think you can blame New Dark. I could be quite wrong though. I don't recall if the NewDark zip includes a dark.cfg, but that's where the AI changes would come from. I'm not sure it's advisable, but you could restore your original dark.cfg if this is the case.
The main benefits of NewDark are higher resolution support, audio fixes/updates (like OpenAL available for example), no more resolution switching between game and menu, ability to play in windowed mode, no need for multi-core fixes, etc. But, if Thief works fine for you and you're okay with running the game at 1024x768 for example, then "to each his own." And to be honest, personally, after what I've heard that has been done to thief 1/gold with TFIX I'm happy to stay with a non-NewDark version of Thief Gold myself.
It was probably an old bug that has since been resolved. If I remember correctly, the version I tried was 1.19. Here is another TTLG post about what I believe is the same issue:
(

Last night, I tried the 1.21 Thief demo and the issue was no longer present. I reinstalled Thief 1.33 into a new directory and applied the "TGTool_v1.0.4.0" from here:

Again, everything ran great and EAX was not enabled as well. It was certainty a legitimate issue that was immediately noticeable. I'm not knocking New Dark because it is obviously keeping the series alive which is a GREAT thing for everyone. I am a happy man right now.
You just have to understand that I played Thief around the time it came out so there is sentimental value for me. I wanted to play it in the original form as much as I possibly could. Sort of like driving an unmodified classic car. Back then, I even went out and bought an Aureal Vortex.
Thief 1.33 runs unmodified with no issues which is still hard to believe though I'm glad that it does.

Hmm. That's certainly peculiar. I still can't shake the feeling that you and the other folks from that thread are using TFIX and not just simply the NewDark patch on its own. For example, in that thread you linked me to, one person mentions how sensitive the AI are which sounds like the Ultimate Difficulty Mod. I didn't think NewDark put that into the zip package by default, but maybe someone can come in here and straighten me out if needed?

Fair enough. I completely understand that. Heck, I've actually installed the original Dark Project previously and tried the game in software mode. :p
If memory serves, in Dark Project you could turn hardware off in the options, but that was removed in Thief 2.

That saleck.net link above doesn't go anywhere.

I would not recommend using TGtool - while it allows you to configure a couple of settings and installs NewDark for you, it lacks the most important thing - the mission fixes. as mentioned in the TFix topic, making T1/TG work properly with NewDark is not as simple as dropping the new files into the game folder, as many things work quite a bit differently in the new engine - for example, a floating island in the mage towers mission will just harmlessly bump away when colliding with a mage in the original engine, but will kill him mercilessly under the new engine. the mission fixes are required to sort out these differences. but even with the fixes, some things WILL work slightly differently, for better or worse (better, most of the time).

It was a long time ago and I think I probably tried everything. Just the other day I saw a thread that listed Thief compatible NVIDIA drivers also compatible with my 7300GT. They didn't work either. When I installed Windows 7 it just worked. No patches or anything. I'm still curious as to why this is.
To be honest, I like the look of the software renderer more than the hardware. Don't think I've tried it yet. Everything works and I'm hesitant to change anything.:cheeky:

That is odd. It doesn't come up for me either. If I search for that package in Google, that exact URL comes up and it works.

Thanks for pointing that out. Thankfully, everything works without any fixes at all. I still have to try Thief2 and Thief Gold. The Thief2 alpha demo also works flawlessly. It truly boggles my mind.
As you can see, I have A LOT of Thief to catch up on.

as someone who knows just how much stuff has been fixed (actively working on TFix and SCP, sometimes helping out a bit with TafferPatcher), I find that statement rather amusing.
but to each his own - if the software renderer with all the orig map and gameplay issues is good enough for you, then by all means, play and have fun.

Actually, the software renderer does not work. I just tried it and it plays way too fast. Very entertaining though. The movies do not work either.
I guess it's like Ultima Ascension. Everyone knows the game is buggy and has problems. They could be fixed but the original game is still fun and brings back a ton of memories.
If you would like me to be completely honest, there are a number of things that I would do to fulfill my own personal vision of the Thief universe. First, I would dump the Dark Engine and Dromed. Not completely because I would take out the more advanced components and instead merge them into the Unreal Engine.
The Dark Engine and the Unreal Engine are very much alike. I was actually told that DE followed in the footsteps of the UE. This sounds logical because of how similar these two engines are and it was this that probably led to the license for Thief3. The essentials of level creation are exactly the same and that's a good thing. I always hated how Quake levels were made. Hated it back in 1996 and I hate it now. It was made much worse with Quake3 and the horrible process of making curved geometry.
I would add radiosity to the UE and also merge certain DE mechanisms in as well. A user friendly system of modification would be introduced and Unreal Script would be heavily modified or removed entirely. In my opinion, the Dark Object mechanism is more advanced than Unreal Script.
Let us be honest with each other here. The original style of game play that Thief introduced is not popular. Was not popular in 1998 is even less popular now. Ghosting through a level is not for the youth of today. Thief3 was not like Thief and Thief4 will be even worse. I liked genuinely liked Thief3 but lacked the original atmosphere of Thief and Thief2. It's just different in its own way.
