Thief 2 FM - The Art of Thievery (Dec. 8, 2001) - by Nightwalker

On Expert, that statuette is a fake and has no loot value. There's a note about it in the Security Control room on that level. As for missing loot, there are some vases on high ledges around a couple of the rooms that are hard to spot if you've left the lights out. One in particular that I found hard to find was in the sitting room that you walk through on your way to one of the doors into the Glasshouse. If you've found all the secrets, then whatever look you're missing is probably someplace like that or there's a room that you've missed going into. Nothing is hidden but it's such a huge mansion that it can be confusing. One reason I've never done a loot list for this mission is that it would be nearly impossible to describe all the rooms where the things are found!

I'm playing this FM for the second time, and the link to the secret list for this mission in thiefmissions.com points to a Not Found page. Anyone arround here has a copy???
IMHO, this is one of the best FM's, even better than any OM. Huge and very well designed. Ghost is not my style of play, but i really enjoyed ghosting this mission. Challenging but not impossible, and with many many paths to follow at every given moment.

Yep, sorry. The screenshots link isn't working. My mistake.

I did the mission on 'normal'. Great layout, nice design, commercial quality FM if I ever saw one. (Yeah, I am new to Thief, but I like it!) Takes forever to get it done, as the size of the playing field is huge, but it is nice to have an open, uncramped area to taff about in.
I am now playing on 'expert'. I have a question about a secret. The drawback of a huge playing area is nicely discussed in a different thread ... (
http://www.ttlg.com/forums/showthread.php?t=77627) ("A great mission spoiled by..."). Great mission, just hard to want to backtrack and find something easily overlooked, even though I am sure I have missed it, without it being TOO secreted away.
There is a room with a
Ships wheel on the wall, which opens up the flag over the fireplace. On 'expert', it is missing a peg. I do not know where to get the peg from, and have prolly missed it in running around.
On 'expert', the North Wing and the Church are opened up to play in, making the mission area even bigger. Can someone post a hint (not a spoiler) as to where it is?
Thanks!
*Edit* On 'normal', I found all the secrets except for the
Purse in the kitchen fireplace.
On 'expert', I think that a few of the 'secrets' are needed to complete the mission (to get the sword), so would be mislabeled, really. Clues seem to point to the sword being
in the secret vault, which I think is behind the elemental talisman thingy behind the clock on the Main Staircase. I have found two of the talismans so far. For the Fire part, it is easy to see where it is at. Frustrated with searching, I read some of the hint list 'till I read the switch for the Fire talisman cage is under a table on the 3rd floor area of the Angel Room.
I have looked under every table for a few rooms around the Angel Room, in the halls, under the chests-of-drawers in the halls, I have passed my loot icon over everything I can table-wise (makes it smaller so I can 'see' a frobbable, plus I can drop or drink it!), and clicked like hell on everything I pass.
Anyone care to help me on this, too? I am about ready to give up on it and come back to it way later. :bored:
The ships peg is worn by the guard standing outside one of the doors into that room. It's easy to miss seeing it when you're trying to Ghost.
Where the entrance is?? There are two doors and neither is hard to find. One is
at the top of a set of stairs, on the same balcony as one of the computer control rooms.
and the other one is
is off of a hallway on the second floor. It's labeled I believe.
The Fire Talisman:
The switch is underneath a table on the top balcony that runs around Angel Hall. There was a water arrow lying on the table, which would be a good clue, but you may have already picked it up.
If you still can't find it, send me an email and I'll take a screenshot for you. I was one of the people who LOVED this mission so let me know if you need anymore help. :)

I worded that badly. I meant that if the piece I needed were in the North Wing, then the playing area is made bigger still on 'hard' or 'expert' with it open. If you could hint where the piece would be, as I can't find it in the mansion without the North Wing open.
:D

Oh, no, it's not in the North wing. As I said, the peg is
right outside the door of the room you use it in.
:)

I had meant the peg, yes. I had found it earlier. I used the
windows in the Garden, on the ledge, to loot the tables in that hall. I had opened the door, and seem to remember leaning out and around the corner to click the stationary guard for keys, etc, and getting nothing. Guess I just had a bad angle. I went back, leaned out again, and saw a part of the peg. The graphics of his armor had been drawn over most of the peg, so it was hard to see. Thanks!
Now, can you tell me if there is a clue in the game as to
where the safe key is, in the Lord's Study? I believe I have checked all the guards for pickables, and as far as I know, I have been through all the rooms, unless I missed secret room somewhere. I don't see any unaccounted for space in the walls. The only rooms I have not double checked are the Study itself and the Elemental Room under it, although I did look around everything in them.
If there is an in-game clue to find it, then I can re-look for that (if I can find THAT, heheh). :bored:
And, as far as I have gotten-
* I have the 4 talismans
* I have opened the Lord's Study
* I have turned off all the security devices that I can find switches for (the library ones are still on)
* I have not found all the secrets, as the check is not in the Options yet
* I DID find the switch to move the captain's bed, so I don't see how the key would be hidden in his room
* I have the instructions the captain was given, but I am not sure where the captain pathed off to (he is triggered to move when you get near his bedroom door, no?)
* If the captain is pathing in the room over the Lord's Pool, he has no key on him
Also, I have a
toolbox key, that was lying around. I have not found a toolbox yet to use it on. Any hint?
I hate always asking for help, but I don't know anyone that plays Thief to compare notes with.
Thanks!

Don't worry about asking for help! That's why this forum exists and we all need a hand fairly often. :)
The safe key
is worn by his Lordship and he walks out of the Captain's room when you get near it (not the Captain), patrols through some nearby hallways then returns to that same room and stands in there.
I just read the instructions scroll and it IS a little confusing, which I didn't pick up on in betatesting. I believe that's the only clue about the key, though I must say I haven't played this one for quite a long time.
The toolbox key has no purpose and was left in by mistake so you can just throw it away.
