First, you are in the Lord's private library in the North wing, right? There are several large libraries in this mansion which can be a bit confusing. I'm pretty sure that the window you remember is on the second floor. You need to step out onto the ledge and look at the building opposite. It will hold rope arrows so you can climb up to get to the ledge outside the 3rd floor window. There's also an attic window in the building you put the rope arrow into. You probably have to investigate in there to. I know you do on Expert but I'm not positive about Hard.

:rolleyes: Oh...my fading memory got me again. Yea...that second floor window was the start of my way up. When I looked out and up earlier, it didn't look like I had a place to shoot a rope. That spot is pretty high up and it didn't look feasible. :nono: But after I left message, I decided to go back around to a few places that I had missed in the meantime to gather a few more items...like an Invis and more moss arrows. Then went back to take another look out of that window again, after reading a walkthru you had written up long ago. A lot of it didn't pertain to my game but the info did suggest that it was the correct way to get upstairs...so when I left game the other day I was standing on the ledge above looking into study and watching all the bad guys pass by just where I needed to drop down into and try to get over to shadowed area between some bookshelves without getting spotted...ha, ha!
My game was modified by RiCh long ago to make it somewhat easier for me, although I think it was done more for EaSy than on HaRd, but not sure now as I thought he took all the Helmeted guys out and replaced by normal types? However, there are still Helmeted ones in this mode...hmmmm. I just had asked him long ago about the very high alert he had used and didn't think it was fair given all the other conditions. So he was kind and good enough to make me a Huntress Edition! :) I just loved that guy and how wonderful he was as one of our premier modders and so sad when he decided to leave DromEd. Maybe he will come back to do T3 mods as he was looking forward to that game long ago as well. But even more, I hope he gets into TheDarkMod tools because I'll be able to play Mods from that method's use since I have Doom3. :)
Thank you for the reply Nightie and now after having done some caught up rest...I'll be back to "Art" shortly after posting this message. :cool:

Wow. This mod is...fantastic. It's stunning!
With mods like these, who needs new games?

Holy hell, how did I not get around to playing this mission over the past (almost) six years? Just a fantastic piece of work, and it's less than 6 mbs! Took me six hours first time through on expert, and now that I know what I'm doing, it's time to ghost it. (This would take me 12 hours to first-time ghost, and I don't have that much patience. Or, more accurately, my wife doesn't have that much patience.)
In the frequent lists of the canonical fan missions, I usually don't see "Art of Thievery," but it absolutely deserves its place. Very belated kudos to Rich. I am also a big fan of his "A Smuggler's Request," a challenging and puzzling mission in its own right.

Has anyone played this excellent game recently. I'm playing first time thru in GhOsT mode and I'm stuck because
I never got my hands on the Lord's safe key. And that means I don't have the combination to the second hatchway door in the water in the ceiling!
.
I've searched these forums a long time (poor me) for where and how to find
the safe key
- I've waited forever for
the Lord to walk back to the Capitan's room, but he does not come back (poor me again) as some have suggested he would.
I've even grabbed the heavy duty drill apparatus from a hallway display and tried to
drill into the Lord's safe with that - no dice!
Any help? Does the safe key exist?
Thanks -

He should have come back. Perhaps he got stuck somewhere? Do you have a save from before you entered the Captain's room? He is wearing one of those funny gold helmets and he walks out the Captain's door, turns left and goes through a door into the big hallway with lots of pictures on the walls. He goes up the short flight of stairs at the end, along the hallway and through the door on the left into the Main Hall. He proceeds up the stairs and enters his bedroom. He stays in there for quite awhile. Have you checked in there for him?

Thanks a lot Nighwalker.
I thought I'd been back to the Lord's bedroom a few times. I'd stopped thinking about it.
(I also think the drill should have worked. That would have been the balls.)
But thanks for unstucking us!
... to Lord's bedroom without alerting the guards? They go on alert the moment I begin picking the lock, then one hits that alarm switch and everything goes red light...
Nightwalker on 12/1/2008 at 02:56
Maybe they were already a bit alerted when you approached the door? Perhaps just try sitting still for a minute or two and then try it again. I know it can be done as I've ghosted the mission several times myself. (Though it's more fun to whack them all on the head!:cheeky: )
CheeseshireCat on 12/1/2008 at 10:10
I thought of gassing them... But I have only two arrows and mines make a lot of racket -- and that area is high visibility and there are two more guards patrolling there.
No, alert level definitely wasn't an issue -- tried the following:
- waiting there in "blocks sight" door's box for ~ half an hour;
- going elsewhere then coming back after doing lots of other stuff;
- moving around trying to find the "sweet spot" where they won't detect me;
- restarting the mission (twice)...
All the same, it was the same result. Also, the nearby guards always went on alert when I was trying to pick Angel Hall outside door.
On one of restarts, had an even crazier alert bug. Guards always went on alert when I was crossing the doorway from South staircase to that corridor with a ramp going to the side door to Lord's qts. No matter if any guards were even nearby. No matter if I crossed it by running, creeping, mossing the passage first, dousing all the lights around first, or even airborne (either by leaping or by sticking several rope arrows along and swinging from one to the other).
Anyway, I managed to solve the original problem. In a very weird way. I stuck a rope into ceiling, climbed up there, and made an initial lockpick click from there (apparently, only the initial one produces any detectable sound). Then pulled the rope out, landed on the floor, went back to the "darkbox" and finished picking (it proved to be impossible to climb or jump from the rope to the floor without alerting guards AND quickly -- and while on the rope, I was almost in red visibility, and as I mentioned there are two more guards that patrol that area).
And well, sometimes, whacking everyone is fun, but I preferred stealth missions since 1988 (a cookie for anyone who can guess the game I started sneaking from ;))
