My thief 2 game disc exploded inside my drive 10 minutes ago. I think a moment's silence would be in order...
... Me and and the mrs. were planning to play some thief this weekend, and I think I recall reading about a patch or something that eliminated the need for a cd to be present in the drive while taffing. Is this true, and where can I locate that patch?
Thank you:)

We will all mourn him. :( He will sit next to the Builder now.
Hope everything goes alright and you will be able to play Thief again soon.

Google search for it. You'll find it.

Wait a sec, is this thing really common with Thief or am I just paranoid? I've seen countless of threads about Thief 2 game disc exploding in drive over the years, and it has actually happened to my friend once. What's the deal - do game cds just explode after they've been used a lot or is there some sort of Pagan curse with Thief?

A minor crack in the disc will cause it to explode once it reaches a high rate of rotation. An audio CD only needs to operate at 1x in order to listen. Games discs go far beyond that during install and regular spin ups. Some drives have 52x or 56x, its been sometime since I've looked into what speeds they offer now. You can use 'Game Jackal' to play w/o CD checks on other games besides Thief. (

Yeah, this happened once with a cheap-ass disc rip I got from a friend ~6 years ago. It was a copy of Aliens, and I think it had a crack around the inner rim. So I was watching it, and remember the chest-burster scene? It had just a little more oomph to it as the disc *CRRRACKED* and the screen went blank.
Then the front panel of the drive flew across the room, followed by this pretty, sparkly fairy dust ejecting from the drive along with little triangular slices of rainbow pain.

Sorry but discussing cracks is against forum rules so no more about that please. Feel free to talk about exploding dics though! :cheeky: Thankfully, I've never experienced that myself.
