Secret backdoor entrances are usually present in places of illegal activities, and/or in buildings owned by eccentrics in the canon. I'd consider most of the buildings in this small map to be places of illegal activity, or barely legal. I'd also suggest that this is all only one corner of a larger map. The most concentrated area in this slum city section of mob-controlled territory, with rowdy bars, gangs, fortifications, and various forms of gambling and wild entertainment (dancing girls?). Since the original intent was to have the City Watch, under Truart, raiding the place (successfully, to keep with canon), I would think most of the buildings would fitted out to deal with cops and competition, whether through fighting or fleeing.

That's what I was thinking, but the secret door to the backstage of a dance hall seemed to be a little wierd. Usually secret doors don't lead to areas which are wide open to the public on the other side. Maybe I'm looking at the door backwards, and it is a secret emergency exit from the dance hall for when it is raided?

Depending on how it was intended fictionally, we've seen it in movies when a person runs out and hides in a crowd, and we've seen a person use the cover of a crowd to slip out into a back passage. The ones who know about the escape routes would position themselves near one, and more so the more rationally paranoid they are.

I would just like to say that I would love it if someone made a mission based on Garrett digging up info on Karras before the Soulforge mission. It would make it interesting but I understand that canon-like it wouldn't really fit well lol
Anyone think about making something like this or shall it simply be an idea to fantasize about? xD

I included a minor side-story in "Bonds of Mine" (Now part of the "Mine Saga" campaign) that involved encountering info on Karras' past. The mission doesn't revolve around that, though the side story was inspired by what I'd heard about the mission that was cut from Thief 2.

Hello guys,
I just wonder what's the current status on recreating thief 2 gold?

No one is working on it. I don't think there was ever a truly serious, organized attempt to do so.

At least the levels that do exist can be converted to work with NewDark if it hasn't already been done yet.

that shouldn't be a problem, but if I remember correctly, the T2 gold levels are just a bunch of very rough maps, no real backstory, voiceovers or anything, so anyone attempting to finish them up would end up remaking everything from scratch anyway.
the most complete mission has been used as a base for the Finals at the Academy FM, if memory serves First City College FM.

I wonder what happened to the game assets used in the Thief 1 trailers between 1996 and 1997. There's a certain video of Thief in what was later to be Lord Bafford's Manor as it looked in 1996. That's what drove me to start exploring PlayerArm animations. If I were patient, I could replicate those exact sword swings from the 1996 video:
