Very much so, but practicality never enters into this kind of discussion. The main reason things like this won't happen is that it would be really goddamn tedious to recreate every detail of an old game in a new engine and spend years porting things over. It would be at least as big a project as T2X, but the people working on it wouldn't have the fun associated with trying out new ideas and creating things that were truly their own. Plus the most steadfast purists would rake you over the coals either way.

that or the possiblility that Eidos wouldnt give a shit anyways. They (to me) seem to have **better** things to worry about (though nothing is better than Thief, mind you) than a bunch of modders, but hell, they are Eidos... They might go, "Hey! Badguy! Stop right there unless you want me to stick you with my sword until you go, 'Ouch! I'm Dead!'"

Modder: Recreate an entire game using next-gen content
EIDOS: Send a form letter with some blanks filled in
No reasonable person would pin so much work on a project that could be cancelled so easily on obvious legal grounds. Besides which, this is always brought up as something someone else should do. Plenty of people might want to play it, but that doesn't mean anyone wants to spend years making it.
Any such project would also have to be pretty much disowned by the Dark Mod team, since I doubt they'd want to get foxed over someone else's project that probably wouldn't see completion anyway.
