I'm running Thief 2 on a laptop w/ WinXP.
It worked at first... sort of. Every time I encountered a scripted moment, like when Garrett says something, or a torch goes out when a water arrow hits it, etc, there was the risk of the game locking up.
Now, when I try to start a game, it locks up when I click "continue" on the mission objectives screen. It starts to load, then the screen goes black.
I tried following Salvage's instructions for running Thief 2 on computers with dual-core processors, but that didn't work.
Any suggestions? I know Thief 2 isn't supported on laptops, so am I pretty much out of luck, here?
Thanks.

Have you tried one of the compatibility modes: ME/2000 or W98?

Yep... same results. :(
I also tried RunFirst, with no luck.

What video card and driver do you have?

Meme probleme, j'ai un dual core, et une G force 7950 512Mo, 2 Go de ram. :(

If you haven't already, try disabling hyper-threading for both Thief processes in the Task Manager, not just the .exe - this solution seemed to work for me.
Disabling the second processor for the .exe definitely improved stability, but I was only able to squash crashes/lock-ups completely (seemingly) by disabling hyper-threading for the other Thief process as well. (I can't recall the file extension exactly, .icd maybe - perhaps copy-protection related?)

I tried to disable dual core from alt ctrl supp on Thief.exe (i'm speaking of thief 1) (Tried CPU 0 only, and CP1 only, and with default, and realtime priority) (Afaik, Thief 1 only have one process running)
I tried to use the "Processor.bat" trick:
imagecfg -u thieffixed.exe
imagecfg -a 0x1 thieffixed.exe
pauseI tried both at once, with every compatibility mode, i have either black screen, or the windows standard error message (the one that ask if i want to send the report).
It is not about copy protection, since it is a true bought game, not a verbatim one :p
So i am quite lost.

Yeah, I tried the Processor.bat solution as well... didn't work. :(
I have an ATI X1300 video card w/ 512 MB of RAM (and the latest driver), so it should be okay... supposedly.
What mystifies me is that the game used to load. It glitched sometimes when triggered events occurred, but at least I could get into the mission. I think I might try uninstalling the entire thing, reloading it, and start from scratch.

Laptops often have cheap onboard sound.. try disabling EAX, maybe that helps.
