I installed Thief 2 on a win xp system. The game played but it looked terrible. Gamma issues. In some areas I couldn't see anything unless I turned the gamma way up and then it really looked bad. I uninstalled and downloaded Tafferpatcher. I used TP to install the game. The only setting that works on my system is dx9 compatibility. No change in appearance. I installed patches and inhancements but no difference. I realize the game is 12 years old but when I played it on my old win 98 se system I didn't have this problem. Any ideas?

Are you sure it's not simply down to your monitor? If you were using a reasonable CRT on your old Win98 system and are using a low-end LCD now that could well explain part of the problem.

I never considered the monitor. It's a Samsung that I purchased from Costco. Everything else that I have played on it ( just finished Borderlands) looks great. Not sure why this game would be any different.

Depending on the technology used in the LCD panel it may not have a decent colour range at low light levels - which are very predominant in thief levels. The fact you had to increase the gamma to compensate suggests that this may be the cause of your problem. A lot of other games have higher light levels where the limitations at the lower end aren't as obvious.
What's the model of your Samsung monitor? It would help to know which panel type you have.

It's a Samsung Sync Master 2494HM.

OK. Looks like a decent display, but it's TN based so it's probably struggling with black levels. You might want to see if you can tweak the monitor settings to improve matters (the (

Thanks. I'll check it out.
