Cracked executables are strongly frowned upon and known violators are banned, even those who ask too often or push the issue, and even if they are beloved of the community.
But you're safe at this time.
I'm beginning to wonder if you should display a signature on every post you make in this thread that says:
"Don't get your hopes up for a Multiplayer Thief. It's too damn buggy, and some maps don't work at all!
But we're working on it."

I'm just thinking aloud here, not advocating anything:
If that's true and there's really no way around it, is there any way you could package it as a patch which modifies the .exe file to be multiplayer-friendly? That way a person would just have to run the patch on the executable file they already have, and it wouldn't be run-able by itself. So it itself wouldn't be pirating the game; you still need a valid .exe file to begin with. (i.e., if they have a valid .exe to begin with, that serves the very protection function it's modifying, and of course it'd be entirely unacceptable to upload the newly unprotected .exe after that, just like it's always been). Is that being too sophistic?
Edit: another idea ... this is often something best left for behind the scenes.
You might PM an administrator, and then you can start a conversation about it through PMs and consider how to handle it.

Nope. The lack of copy-protection software does not mean Thief is no longer copyrighted. Unless it's officially released by the copyright holder into public domain, you can expect to die of old age before you are free from legal constraint.

It was wishful thinking on my part.
I hope, then, you are not seriously suggesting, publicly, on this forum, that Tos crack the executable.;)
Because that would mean Tos may witness that which I warned him of.

I should explain, then:
Watch your wording.
New Horizon on 21/12/2007 at 00:10
Given the situation, and the possibilities...I think we should forget the fact that this will require a cracked executable and look the other way. It's not Tos is cracking it to steal the game, it's simply to add some new features.
jtr7 on 21/12/2007 at 00:21
Ah. Thanks for taking the time to explain, NH. It's a touchy area, and any new or uninformed members reading this should learn the distinction.
Abysmal, you know my concern is making sure a line isn't getting crossed, 'cause I don't want to witness another valuable member getting the boot. This isn't about ignoring the fact you own a disk with data on it that isn't software protected against making copies, nor that you are willing to make a copy of a single copyrighted file for someone else. Owning the disk is irrelevant. My major concern has been addressed. It sounded less like you were making an aside about copy protection, and more like you were offering an unrestricted copy of the executable to Tos. But my reading comprehension has admittedly been impaired.
Nameless Voice, I apologize for reminding you of all the jerks that have railed about copyright and legal issues. I never want to be lumped into that group. They have incensed me, too. I truly don't want to see our community hurt by a preventable banning of someone who helps us reach a new height with DromEd and the Dark Engine. Please forgive my ignorance and the ignorance of the new members to come. You know what the EULA states, and I know what this community has achieved with EIDOS' blessing.
Moving on, then!

Multiplayer Thief?! OMG, this is a dream come true. Since I first discovered the game way back when. I've always wanted to be able to invite friends in to the Thief world and show them what makes me love the game so much. I wish the best of luck to all working on this project. Thank you for giving it a try. :)
btw, I'm new to this forum. Long time big, huge Thief fan. Looking forward to posting here and sharing my love for the game.

niiiice video, I am very impressed that you got it working at all and on a standard map
one way you might deal with the "AI hosted on the other machine" type problems would be to try to set up a non playing server system that handles all the AI so effectively everyone has the same AI problem, then attack the problem from there
if that is possible
