It is making no sense to me that I can play Thief fine one day, then it stops loading on the following day when nothing (I am aware of) has been changed. Since no one is responding, I wonder if I should I be posting this question somewhere else? Or maybe I just posted a day too soon that it's working again. :p

You've probably already done this. Just covering some bases here, since no one has mentioned this yet, but check to see if your video drivers are up to date.
And for the game to work some days and not others is very confusing. You said you got it to work briefly with Windows 8 compatibility mode. Does Windows 7 or XP mode help at all, or same problem?

Try to start the Thief2.exe directly, not the desktop shortcut.
Thief keeps 'thinking' that you're on Win 8 (OS Version: 6.2.9200). There were some cases like that in the Tafferpatcher thread.

okay, I will try all of your suggestions - thank you. Result and fix, if any, will be posted here.

My video drivers did need updating. But it didn't change anything with my fan mission problem. :(

Starting Thief directly works in compatability modes for Windows 8 and Windows 7. The original mission starts no problem. In compatability modes 10 and X, it crashes before loading.

You can set the compatibility mode permanently. Does this fix your problem?

Yep. It was set permanently the first time I set it. But problems still persisted.

So what's the problem now? :erm:
This is confusing.
