redleaf, I am not sure whether I understand you right now.
If I got you right, you said that you can always start Thief2.exe directly but in Win7/Win8 compatibility mode, and then it's always OK. If, however, you start Thief 2 in Win7/Win8 compatibility mode via an icon or some menu, then it does not always work, but only sometimes.
Is that right? If so, then this could mean that some option was set in the menu entry or icon/link which causes the problem.

Hi baeuchlein
Since setting Thief2 to compatability mode Win8, I can start Thief2 by clicking directly on it's icon. The problem is when I try to use FMsel to load a mission. It is then that Thief won't load.

Try opening cam_mod.ini and remove the ";" in front of the line no_unload_fmsel
This is a Win10 fix as mentioned in the NewDark/FMSel readme.

Hi Unna and thank you so much!
It worked. I didn't think that fix applied to this problem because the crashes didn't occur when the FM selector closed - or maybe my understanding of it is wrong. If it worked, then the selector must close before the fm begins? I thought it ran until I closed the fm. Sorry, I try to understand this side of things, but really not very good at it.
It says:
; prevent the FM Selector DLL to be unloaded when continuing to main game (can be useful
; if you experience crashes when FM Selector closes)

- added "no_unload_fmsel" option to cam_mod.ini (can be useful if experiencing crash with FMSel, especially on Win10)
Whatever that means, it's helpful :cheeky:
