I'm a complete newbie to the Thief series, please be gentle. :D
I'm having trouble with the door codes in the 2nd mission in Thief 2. Is there a trick to them? I can't see any pattern and so far have only hit on one or two by chance. It's driving me bonkers now that I'm trying to get into specific doors. Thanks for any advice.

First, welcome to the forum, Celan, and welcome to Thief! You have a wonderful time ahead. I envy you just starting out as you get to experience all the wonderful stuff in the original games as well as over 1000 fan missions, many of which are as good or better than the original. While I still enjoy Thief more than any other game, there is nothing quite like that first time playing a mission. Enjoy it!
As for the doors in Shipping and Receiving, there is no real trick to them. Just look at the 4-digit number on the wall outside one of the large green bay doors. Then enter that number into the door control machine in one of the two shacks. That will open the door. Note that when you enter a new number for another door, the door that is currently open will close. You can only have one door open at a time. But, if you pick the Building key from one of the guards, you'll be able to unlock the small orange doors in each of the bays. That way, if the large green door is closed, you can still get in or out through the orange door without having to go back to the control shack. I hope this all makes sense.

I'll add that all door codes are written on your map. Additionally, you can make notes yourself by left-clicking on the map surface and typing anything you want. Pressing Tab key while typing changes the alignment of the text and right-clicking on the text erases it.
Or... Do you have troubles with actually
entering numbers on the locking mechanism itself? The keys are placed similar to a cellphone keyboard:
Just "type" the four-digit combination on them. There's no way to "erase" the wrong combination, so if you made a mistake, just "type" the whole four-digit combination again.

I keep seeing people say "just type in the code"- am I doing it wrong or wth is going on? In my game, when I hit a number, it changes the last digit in the string. The next time I hit a number, it changes the second to last. The third time, it changes the last number again and scrambles the others.
Example, let's say the code box is set on 1234. I hit 6. It changes to 1236. Next I hit 5. It changes to 1256. If I hit 7, it scrambles to something like 4897.
This is why I say, getting the correct code to come up seems to me to be completely random. Or I thought it must be a puzzle of some kind that is beyond me. :erg:
Oh, and thank you for the welcome! I do love the game so far.

Honestly I can't remember exactly how the number wheels spin on the counter but I do seem to recall that the number sometimes didn't make sense until all four numbers were entered. Then it would spin until the correct number showed up on the device. Are you saying that you have entered all four numbers correctly and still didn't get the correct sequence to appear on the counter?

You say, 1256 changes to 4897 after pressing just 7?
This looks like a dead script. What is your Thief 2 version? 1.07 or 1.18?

Celan, don't watch the indicator while typing the combination, it can be really misleading. Just type "0" button four times, the indicator should read "0000", all doors are closed. Then type 0,6,2,4, the indicator should read "0624" and lady Angelica's room should open. Any intermediate indications are irrelevant. If it doesn't work as written above, then then there's a bug in the script for sure.

AFAIR, it works like a shift register, like this:
1234
press
0234
0press
634
06press
24
062press
40624 — the desired combination.

Oh man, I feel stupid. A classic case of overthinking. Your suggestion worked.
While I'm asking newbie questions, a couple little things that bug me. Sometimes it's very hard to highlight an object- I can see it, but can't get the game to highlight it for me. Any trick to that? Also how do you use a ladder? So far I've come up to ladders and tried going down every which way and Garrett always plunges to the ground.
Tannar on 1/9/2012 at 05:04
Highlighting an object can depend on the angle you are viewing it at or the distance you are from it. Try turning your view a bit right, left, up and down to see if that does it. If not, try leaning toward it. The default keys, if I remember correctly, are Alt+W to lean forward which should bring you close enough to it for it to highlight. That is providing, of course, that it is an object that actually does highlight.
Ladders are often tricky until you get the hang of them. There are several ways to descend a ladder. If you are approaching the ladder from opposite side of an opening, you can just fall through the opening and land on the ladder. If you come into contact with a ladder while falling, you will automatically attach to it. If the ladder is on your side of the opening, ledge, catwalk etc., then the most important thing, I think, is to approach it slowly. Crouch and creep forward until you see Garrett's view bob up and down slightly. That is an indication that you have attached to it. Also, it can often be easier to attach while backing up. Just turn until the ladder is behind you and slowly move back until you attach.

The most common problem with highlighting an object that is centered and nearby is with objects attached to dead or unconscious AIs. There's an option for auto-searching bodies and another for how you attach to ladders in the menu under Options>Game.
