What setting is thief 2 set in? I think the fact it's called 'the metal age' kind of put me off buying it.

Same setting, but more of the industrial side, since it focuses on Hammerite corruption. All the games have the industrial sci-fi thing, but the first game was focused on corrupt Paganism, and TDS focused on corrupt Keepers. TMA dwells on explosive progressive futurism from unlocked ancient secrets, while TDP/Gold and TDS swell on the ancient and forgotten past threatening to pull the present back to a darker age with a sick twist.
None of the games are Medieval but contain Medieval elements, as well as the Industrial Age, sci-fi, strange fantasy, Lovecraftian elements, the Roscicrucians and Inquisition, steampunk, Tesla, Victorian, Renaissance, Baroque, Dickensian London, early 1900s, Monty Python... :p
