08/07/2006: Added Mission A Keeper's Betrayal
Fellow Taffers,
We have a lot of threads where members ask others to name fanmissions that are worth playing. I thought lets make a thread where everyone can post the titles of the Thief 2 missions that he/she really finds worth recommending. I hope everyone will respond on this thread seriously, so we can all get a clear view of the missions another member is recommending. Lets create one big database of worth playing fanmissions for Thief 2 The Metal Age.
To make clear what fanmission you find better then the other, you have to rate each mission with a cipher from 7 to 10. But no matter what the score, every mission title you post is worth playing according to you :) :
Rating works like this:
7 - 7.5 = Good (Bronze Award)
8 - 8.5 = Excellent (Silver Award)
9 - 10 = Outstanding (Gold Award)
Explanation: Give every mission you play a cipher from 1 to 10. When you award it a 7 or higher it’s a recommendation and you can add it to the list. Missions received a 6 - 6.5 rating are worth a try, but just not really worth recommending.
The number of missions you want to recommend doesnt matter. You can start with one and add more mission titles (and their ratings) any time you want by editing your existing post.
Responding to this thread without posting a list of missions is of course allowed, as long as it doesn’t turn into a discussion about ratings (see Rule 4 below).
You can use this thread to find which missions the community is recommending, comparing the ciphers you gave with other members etc.
It’s your choice to decide which fan mission you want to play. You can watch the ciphers that a member gave to a mission, the gold-silver and bronze ratings, or you can read the comments a mission received. Maybe you even want to calculate the average rating for a mission.
The Rules:
1 Put the mission in alphabetic order (else finding a specific mission is more difficult)
2 When posting missions place 'The' and 'A' in some titles behind the mission instead of before (also to simply the search for a specific mission).
Example:
'The Seventh Crystal' becomes 'Seventh Crystal, The'.
3 It could happen you listed so many missions that it no longer fits into one post. You can post a new reply and continue posting recommended missions. To prevent confusion you can give your second post ‘Part 2’ or ‘2’ as title or something like it. Also, dont forget to refer to your other next post by a notification below your first post.
Example:
Continued on page 3
4 Please add no missions that you played years ago. Ratings change over the years because the overall quality is improving and there are just much more missions to compare these days (a mission that received an 8 in, say, 2002, may be longer be worthy of that cipher in 2006).
5 Please no reactions like ‘that mission is worth at least a 10!’ or ‘you give that mission only a 7?’ etc. It’s a personal score that you can agree or disagree with. Someone who downloads and plays a listed fanmission can decide for himself which member gives the most credible rating.
The Choices:
1 You may add a comment to the mission(s) you posted. This way someone can better decide a given score is credible and if he/she finds the mission worth playing. Like rating, the comment you give to a mission is your personal opinion.
2 Below your posted missions you may add a small update list with the dates and the names of the missions you added/modified
You're allowed to enter a maximum of 3 dates. When you add a new date, you remove the oldest one.
Example:
Updates: Recently Added/Changed
09/16/05: Added The Seventh Crystal, Omnious Bequest
08/27/05: Added The Inverted Manse, Rowena's Curse
08/11/05: Changed rating of The Seventh Crystal
3 Below your posted missions list you may add the missions you're planning to add to your list shortly.
Example:
Coming Soon: The Seventh Crystal, Calendra's Legacy
4 You may give awards to your favorite missions in various categories like Best City, Best Estate, Best Story, Most Scarry, Best Campaign, Best Graphics, Best Warehouse etc. Giving multiple awards for a mission is possible.
Example:
AWARD Best City FM

Calendra's Legacy - 10 (G)

:erm: ....isn't there already a voting mechanism over the Thief-The Circle, in which you click the vine to cast your vote?
Don
Ottoj55 on 16/9/2005 at 22:34
seems this thread was ready made for me. @dwl6, the voting mech at the circle doesn't display the raw data, and someone, around the time that children of the future was released went on a rampage voting 1s for everything artifically lowering the scores, while making their mission look better, we don't know who did this, but we have a suspect in mind. this allows us to see peoples raw scores and favorites in a much more meaningful way. its also interesting how mission authors and non authors view missions. some of my favorites are so because of design reasons that a player who doesn't dromed wouldn't see. as per the request at the top of the thread, in an effort to keep discussion in this thread to a minimum please feel free to PM me with any questions about my mission ratings, or other missions i might recommend. HMMM, seems several people have posted replies without lists of favorites, come on people, this thread isn't for discussing the voting at thief-thecircle, or a shameless plug for a mission and some discussion about it, this is a place to list your favorites so people don't have to plow through dozens of threads and hundreds of posts. If you've commented in this thread, please take the time to edit your post with a few favorites.
Art of Thievery, 9 (gold)
Comment: One the best mansion break-ins ever concieved, designed to reward the player for ghosting a mission, you frequently are dodging patrols requiring nerves of steel.
Burricks Head Inn, 7 (bronze)
Calendra's Legacy, 8 (silver)
Comment: A three mission pack that plays like a good novel. A huge story with many plot twists and challenges, contains some very advanced design elements as well.
Cathedral of the Damned beta, 8 (silver)
Cistern, The, 7 (bronze)
Deceptive Perception, 10 (gold)
Comment: The scariest fan mission i've ever played.
Dyer's Eve, 7 (bronze)
Embracing the Enemy, 9 (gold)
Comment: A simple job isn't so simple it turns out, a great castle to explore and a constantly evolving plot, plus a mouse that loves cheese.
Equilibrium, 10 (gold)
comments: Keepers out to get you, and they have all the skills you do, stealth, silence and the home field advantage.
Gathering at the Inn, 10 (gold)
Comment: The best fan mission I've ever played. Technical advances abound, fantastic design, voice acting and story, give me Mission X soon.
Hedgerows and Hammerites, 9 (gold)
Hidden Agenda, 9 (gold)
High Towne Museum, 9 (gold)
Comment: Small and beautiful museum level with a great little security system to avoid.
Inverted Manse, 8 (silver)
Comment: Three missions in one and a great story.
Jailbreak, 7 (bronze)
Lord Alan's Fortress, 8 (silver)
Raid On Wash Out Central, 7 (bronze)
Comment: Just felt soaked to the bone in this place, raining, canels and aquiducts everywhere, a complex story set in a street mission.
Ritual, The, 7 (bronze)
Saturio Returns Home, 10 (gold)
Search fro Crom's Blade, 8 (silver)
Comment: Wintery fun in a archeological site with the mechanists, hints of Basil Poledouris' score from Conan the Barbarian complete the mood.
Smugglers Request, 9 (gold)
Comment: A massive mission with a great villian and constantly unfolding story.
Snatch and Grab, 8 (silver)
Stronghold, 8 (silver)
Seventh Crystal, The, 10 (gold)
Comment: Absolutely perfect mansion, fantastic story, and a lot of gameplay options. Wonderful cliffhanger ending, that unfortunately looks unlikely to be completed.
Thief Noir, 10 (gold)
Comments: Perfect black and white conversion mission.
Warehouse 51 c1, 7 (bronze)
comments: well designed mod, like the concept and wish it were used in something larger.

Updates : 2005/10/19 : Ack ! there's a zombie in the basement : 7 (B)
Thief Noir : 7 (B)
Update : 2005/10/24 : Keeper's betrayal, A : 8 (S)
Update : 2005/10/25 : Shining standards : 8.5 (S) Two missions in one. I would gladly have given it a 9 but the inside of the manor was too poorly furnished. Reminds me very much of Masks and Casing the Joint (the manor that is). Excellent hidden places, some of them very spooky. The outside of the manor is beautiful with lovely snow effects. Second part of the mission is shorter but great fun. Takes place aboard a ship with a drunken crew. Very highly recommended. Make sure you play on Expert to gain access to all the extras and secrets for mission one.
Update : 2005/10/26 : Darkness falls : a dire venture : 6.5
This mission is the sequel to "The royal Garmyth". Short and easy. Disturbing music. For taffers who love crates.
Update : 2005/10/27 : Deceptive perception : 8 (S).
Well I braced myself to do this one. Hard for those who don't like spiders. Short but impressive. Excellent well-suited soundtrack. The most interesting is the juxtaposition between the normal and paranormal worlds. No great replayability value i'm afraid.
Updates 2005/10/30 : A friend in need : 8.5 (S). Excellent and innovative in a way. You are free to pick up some equipment or none at the start of the mission. Playing it with no gear at all (except for the sparse arrows you find at random) makes you think hard about finding your way through and escaping AI's sharp attention. Great experience, also funny and humourous. More of these, please ! You'll have guessed of course: no gear is strongly recommended for true and daring taffers !
The skull of Saint Yora : 7 (B). Takes place in a mechanist compound. Easy, only one difficulty. Nothing outstanding.
Update : 2005/11/04 : Forgotten rites : 8 (S) . A very promising first fan mission by an author named Krush. Takes place in a hammers' compound and underground crypts, featuring some good undead and a story of spells and magic.
Good textures, good music, engrossing story. Highly recommended.
Update : 2005/11/06 : Trainspotting : 7 (B) . Trains. Short and cool, one amusing scene and guards' name references. Easy.
All these missions are really worth playing. The notation is of course subjective but for a small part only depending on my personal tastes and fields of interest and what I'm looking for in Thief missions. All are either good, excellent or outstanding. When I have some time I'll come back to comment on the missions. Have to think about it first. Let me just say that for people who like hard puzzles I would recommend Timoteus, the relic or the focus (very cerebral missions). Great adventures , there's plenty to chose from (Bafford's last stand, turn of the tide, L'Arsène, a brawl in the tombs ). Old comrades, Old debts is a real jewel but very frustrating. Please don't shout at me if I only quote a few I repeat they're all very good and worth playing

Frobable Cause 10 :cheeky:
Mosley on 18/9/2005 at 18:23
I've also played Frobable Cause Mxleader and give it a seven (Bronze). It's good but a bit short and also difficult because of the tiny switches. Please go on making FM if you have time and thank you for Frobable Cause :thumb:

Today I introduced some changes in the posting descripted. Firstly I added a new rule and one new optional addition. Secondly some texts have been re-arranged to make the manual more clear. Also I added a new mission, and added a comment and changed the rating for two others to set an example (notice the Updates: Recently Added/Changed title at the bottom of the post)
So far I would like to thank Ottoj55 and Mosley for their large lists of recommended missions they posted. Also I ask every other member who plays fanmissions for thief 2: If you have any recommended missions, and can rate them as described, post it. Until now, we can't call this thread a succes :erg:

Yes, but it is very unreliable. I believe there was an explanation of the "idiot effect" on the system posted about a month ago.

Speaking of stats, has anyone noticed that the download statistics for T2X have fallen to a flat zero? (Not surprising, I know, but whatever.)
