I said I already did that.
When you say to 'run the fm shortcut' I'm assuming you mean the Thief 2 The Metal Age shortcut on the desktop. So I click on that, I get the option to play t2x or t2 but when I click on t2x I still get the t2 mission.

I have just tried those four steps again to be sure - when you double left click "T2x" in the fmselect window, T2x should launch.

Yes, it uses every config file placed in the \t2x directory as opposed to the \Thief2 directory when you play T2X via DarkLoader as it treats T2X as its own game. If you don't copy your keybinds and all of that over then you'd have to do them over again yourself, for example.

When I click on t2x to launch it, through DarkLoader, I get the little window asking if I want to play t2x or thief 2, and I click on t2x and I get the thief 2 game.
I was looking at the tech support forums on how to go about installing and playing t2x, and it explained the shortcut, how the target needs to point to thief 2.exe and it needs to start in t2x, so I tried to change that manually, but it says I need admin permissions, which is dumb because I'm the only user and the admin.
If I uninstall Thief2 and everything else with it, all the patches and t2x etc, will I lose the saves from the thief 2 fm i'm currently playing?

backup the saves folder from T2x and you should be safe.

voodoo, the magic that you do...it worked. Yes. I uninstalled everything and reinstalled as you said,. I think maybe it didn't work the first time, even tho I did as you suggested, because thief 2 and all the patches were already in the system.
There's only a slight problem when I play it, it's a bit jumpy as far as the mouse is concerned, and every time there's a transition, like when save or read, it goes to desktop briefly then back to the game.
I also seem to have lost the fog effect. I had it playing t2.

try using the fixup package I've linked on the previous page - just extract to your T2x folder, overwrite.

To prevent the game from switching resolutions when you enter the menu or read books, NewDark's cam_ext.cfg needs the uncommented (; removed from) line "single_display_mode" with a number next to it, 2 for double buffering, 3 for triple. For example:
