Hi, I'm a n00b to both this forum and the Thief series. I found Thief through SS2, and after seeing what Thief TDP was like, I bought the trilogy. I beat Thief Gold and now I'm on Thief 2, and I think this might be my favorite game series ever. The gameplay is great, and the atmosphere, immersion, story - everything is simply amazing. I've never seen anything like it.
However, I've read that Thief 3 doesn't live up to its predecessors for various reasons (third person is very disappointing to me :() and that specifically someone tried to partially rewrite the rendering engine on their own, etc.
I'm very interested in finding out what went wrong with the development of Thief 3, what happened with the rendering-hack preventing rope-arrows (so I read on a YouTube comment,) etc. but I can't find this information anywhere. So, could a kind and knowledgeable TTLG member point me toward some information about what happened to the development of Thief 3?
Thanks :)

Glad to hear you found this great game and are enjoying it. The original missions have a lot to offer but when you finish those, there is a trove of excellent fan missions to dive into. In regards to your question about Deadly Shadows, I feel that the game fell short from its predecessors simply because it was developed for Xbox in addition to PC. From I design perspective, I think they had to accommodate the Xbox crowd as well as the PC crowd so things got changed, likely to make it more profitable as a console release. I do remember when TDS was in development, they stated that things like the rope arrow and swimming in water were hard to implement into the game engine thus leading to the removal of all aspects of swimming and the addition of the climbing gloves. I know there are people who hated TDS and those who tolerated it and even those who enjoyed it. In my opinion, TDS wasn't a terrible game but it is a departure from the excellence previously established with Thief 1 and 2. I would say give the game a go and see for yourself. The story was decent and there are some really neat missions ;)

Not directly related to this one (so no offense per se), but to this kind of threads: Does everyone consider it normal that people open threads for every ridiculously trivial personal matter? I mean there have been topics like "I have finished T1. Should I play T2?" or "Want to play Thief, which part is best for starting?" or "I finished Thief 2. Which are the very best über-FMs?". I'd rather spend the five bucks for such a game or use YouTube or reviews (or the forum search function!) to get a glimpse of what I want to see/know, but I'd never ask such questions in a new tread. :weird:

Beleg Cúthalion but then, you actually think things out. :D

Thanks for the info jtr7 and Shinra-Zer0, too bad about multiplatform restrictions :(
And Beleg Cúthalion, I'm sorry if I'm not following proper forum etiquette. I'm a little unfamiliar with how things work on non tech-support-ish forums.
Just for future reference, where should I ask questions such as these? Is necro-posting okay here? Or should I keep such admittedly trivial questions to myself and only consider posting if it would be of interest to the community (which does make sense considering the word 'forum' :tsktsk:)

I'd just advise you not to read any TDS-related complaining, see it all yourself first.

Yeah, there's no way that I'm not going to play TDS now that I've bought it, I fully plan to play the trilogy.
My post was just about trying to find some of the history of TDS development which Googleing/forum searching didn't yield.

Yep. Reading negative feedback can influence your view of the game as you play it. After one has played all 3, then one can read the reviews and see whether the complaints are legitimate. Also, starting from the first one and playing the series in chronological order helps you have a more objective opinion of it all. I mistakedly played the Silent Hill series starting from the later games of the series and failed to appreciate SH1 because it was a past generation game. But I played the Thief- and Splinter Cell series in order, and I still like Thief 1 even though I think Thief 2 is better, and I still like SC 1 even though SC3 is much better.

No problem, really, but I wanted to ask that question for a long time and somehow it happened this week. I might have a more strict understanding of how you "fill" an internet forum, so all those people are probably right in asking about what game they should buy and I'm just a bit quirky. :erg:
