How hot is your system running? A lot of the time HEAT is the problem.
The Video cards really get a workout with T: DS.
I'll test all of these. I find them strange, as I've run games with more vigorous graphics and effects without problem. But I suppose those engines were better optimised...

I had a similar problem but in Stonemarket Propper. Turned out to be a corrupted savegame. If your getting a bsod then let windows fix the error with scandisk.

It's definitely a problem with the game. I'm suddenly hitting it now.
In my case, it always happens at *specific* load zones. The second I step into them, the system reboots - no warning, no nothing.
Here's the thing: it's a brand-new machine. I just built it. It doesn't have tons of software on it, just a few games. I'm running XP Pro, but I haven't gotten around to putting Service Pack 2 on yet (I need to sign up for broadband and then I'll update). Also, I have no problems with other games, so it's not a RAM issue or a heat issue. UT2004 hasn't had one issue yet. Also, I'm running the newest available NVidia drivers on a GeForce 6600 GT.
In the first "real" mission, the game crashes if I enter the load zone past the armory, but not if I go through the one at the top of the stairs. It was only a matter of time until I found a critical level transition that crashed... for me, it's the one between Stonemarket Plaza and Stonemarket Proper. I can't continue the game until I find a fix (it's the only way in there at this point in the game). I've played T3 all the way through on XBox, so it's not like I'm totally SOL... but I'm loving playing it on the PC with the hi-res textures installed. :)
Does anyone know anything more about the savegame corruption? Is there a way to know if one is bad?

pootz I have the same problem, the instant crash. One thing I've noticed, it seems to be related to the 6600 vid card. I just got one (not a GT) and wanted to try TDS again (it looks great BTW!) but I've also run into the problem. :(. And the re-launch game WONT work, I tried for 2 days.

i got thief deadly shadows when it came out and i had no problems playing it. and today said to my self might reinstall it and play it once more but now seems that the random restarts happning to me now :( i have it happen 3 times so far once when i tried to start a new game, then when i tried to change some controls and then when i tried a quick load.
i have a geforce 4 ti 4200 out dated yea :( but worked fine before when first got the game the only hardware changed since the game has been out is more 512mb's of ram. my self think it could be a nvidia driver problem as other ram sucking game such as boiling point works fine cept for known bugs in that game. i have the newest nvida drivers the 77.77 ones.
comp spces over all are
amd 1800+
1024 mb ram
windows 2000
geforce 4 ti4200 128mb

I downloaded the 77.77 drivers for my GF 3ti and I must say that they aren't too good for the older cards. The highest driver number which doesn't make my PC hang after a moment is 71.89.

EIDOS FAULT?
=================================

CONCLUSION to the game crash!

=================================
I really want to play this game but I have that restart bug.
I will tell you what is the reason for restart: GAME BUG.
In my case:
1. It restart only when passing from an area to another.
2. It restarts my computer ONLY in Stonemarket plaza. I can't continue the game so I don't know if it will be restarts in other places in game. I've tried to enter in that place from 3 diffrent places: in the moment I have stepped in it, BOOM, reset.
3. I have no other crashes in other games. I have no other crashes at all.
4. Video cards tested: NVidia 5700 LE 256MB and NVidia 6200 TD 128MB
5. Drivers tested: from 71.89 to 77.77
6. All kind of video settings tested ON/OFF: AA, amperture, memory sub-clock, lower AGP, fast writes, etc
7. Cpu temperature: 41-48 Celsius.
Computer in-case temperature: under 45 Celsius
I not a overclocking fan, si no overclock engaged.
So, is not:
-a power problem,
-cooling problem,
-I'm pretty shure also isn't a driver problem
My pc: :thumb:
MBO NForce 2 Ultra400
AMD Athlod XP 1800+
GeForce WinFast A6200TD 128RAM
Power: 550W
256+512 DDRAM
Sound: AC97 Realtek
I must say something else: the gameplay is REALLY but everythings else SUCKS big time. I play the game in 800x600 with quality settings on low and I have only 20-25 FPS. And all textures SUCKS! The game engine (Unreal) should be a great one but EIDOS ruined it.
So, everybody (AND I MEAN EVERYBODY here) let's send an email to Eidos to give us a second patch or our money back.
:nono: :nono: :nono: :nono: :nono: :nono:

Com'on peoples!
It really is a bug in game. Just look at these.
I've searched more on the web. Lots of peoples have this problem.
And EIDOS left lots of bugs and uncovered areas in their software:
------------------------------------------
When I try to run Thief: Deadly Shadows, the game crashes immediately after starting it.
This problem is usually caused when Thief: Deadly Shadows is run on a video card that does not support Pixel Shader. Unfortunately, unless your video card has the physical components to support Pixel Shader 1.1, Thief: Deadly Shadows simply will not work.
Unless you are running an Nvidia GeForce 3 ti, 4 ti, or FX, or an ATI Radeon 8500, or Radeon 9200, 9600, 9800 series card, this game will not run. Please remember, none of the Nvidia GeForce MX, or GeForce 2/GTS/GO video cards are supported.
Any ATI Radeon card not listed on the game package will not run Thief. On-board Intel (82810, 82845, 82845G, 82865G) video chips are NOT supported, as they lack nearly all the required hardware for Thief: Deadly Shadows.
***Please note Nvidia TNT cards and ATI Rage cards are also NOT supported***
------------------------------
The game crashes when I try to enter Audale!
Most people have reported that they do actually enter Auldale for 1-2 seconds before the game crashes. If you are also seeing this, then try this. Load your saved game and move to enter Audale. Once the load bar is full and the level loads, immediately start pressing F10 (QuickSave) or ESC. You want to get the game to either QuickSave or manually save while you are in Auldale. Then, close Thief if it doesn't crash again, and restart Windows. Bring the game back up, and load that save. You should then be able to continue on.
