Hello. I have a graphic issue with thief 3. First here is my computer details. Windows 7 32-bit; Pentium 4 3ghz; Ati Radeon HD 4730 with 512 MB GDDR5; 2 GB system memory. I used catalyst 9.12 then I tried catalyst 10.12 but nothing changed. The problem: I see some light distortion on lighted walls. It only apears when I am at distance. When I come closer the distortion disapears. What are the latest drivers that work well ?
I tried also catalyst 9.5, can't go lower because it's not supported. Same thing. What I noticed is that on walls made of bricks there's no problem. For example at the wieldstrom museum there are some walls that are covered with a green material with nice models, flowers or leafs or something like that. Well only here apears the light distortion. It looks like a rainbow with some bands. It's not electromagnetic interference of course. In windows everything is ok. And as i said the rainbows don't apear everywhere.
I have the texture pack from John P. Something went wrong when I installed it. Acording to the options i made in the installer, it should apear a new loading screen but it didn't, it remained the original but the textures in the game were replaced with the high quality ones. I think I'm going to uninstall the textures to see if it resolves the issue. If the issue disapears I'll take a look on John P's help file to search for clues about what went wrong.

I have no idea about driver issues since IIRC there is nothing wrong with graphic cards support like with T1/2. Other issues are multicore-related but don't affect graphics that much. Could you provide a screenshot, please? I'm just curious. Plus, meanwhile there are new executables in the making for widescreen and multicore processor support. Look (

Thanks for your reply. Here's a link to the screenshot. Click on the image and it will be larger.

I think that's not a driver issue. If it was a driver problem maybe all textures would have been affected. What do you think of the distortion ?
Also those bands aren't stationary, as I move the mouse they flicker and move. When I'm far away from that type of wall there's no problem. When I come closer the issue appears, I continue to get closer to the wall and the issue disappears.

You're refering to the lamellar effect, aren't you? At least I cannot find anything similar in my T3 editor experience, so it's nothing from "inside" the game IMHO (and this would be strange in the first place, but you never know). Have you tried playing with the multi-sampling options and bloom (in the options menu)?
Still, the rainbow or moiré effect could happen without anything not working properly, just because the way of displaying things your graphics card has might exaggerate the effect which would occur regardless.

Yes, that's the effect. I'll try tomorrow to modify bloom and multisampling.

Hi. Bloom setting didn't resolved the issue. But I uninstalled John P's texture pack and now the lamelar effect doesn't appear no more ! I played the game with John's textures some years ago on windows xp and I don't think that I saw the issue.

In the case of the fabric tapestry texture he surely enhanced the horizontal lines. Together with the 3D effect caused by the lighting and the normal map, this might be a good reason for a strong moiré effect.
Sad, though, if the high-res textures look strange at your machine. I really like them.

Yes, I like those textures too, and I still use them. What videocard and drivers do you have ?

GeForce GTX 460, so right from the start something different. Still, sometimes I see these effects as well, albeit not annoyingly.

I started to play thief gold. I never played it. I think I spent 5 hours to make it work. I red forums, tried settings. I had two problems. Sometimes when I launched the game it said that direct x 6 wasn't installed and the game menu appeared in a window, and when I launched the mission there was a black screen. Also the hardware setting was off and unchangeable. The second problem: the directx message didn't apeared, in menu hardware setting was on, full screen, but when I started a mission apeared a black screen again. When I was about to go to sleep I saw a post where someone said that the thief executable shoudn't be run with compatibility settings. I did that and finally, it works !!! Of course with ddfix, and resolution set in cam.cfg
