is there any way at all to minimize the game and not have it pop right back up at me? because i do alot of things at once on the computer and as a result i like to minimize the games sometimes and get to doing other stuff that needs to be done. like with thief 1 and 2 they minimized when i alt +tab just fine but when i do that with thief 3 it minimizes for a split second then pops right back up anyone know how to do such things?

Some games you just aren't allowed to.
Best you can do is go to it's "pause" or "menu" screen before you alt-tab, that helps sometimes.

For most games, I have to use ctrl-alt-delete to get back to the desktop. Once in awhile, I have to alt-tab it first.

hmmm... most game companies alert that alt-tabing while in a game may cause instabilities with the game. And by the way, games are not supposed to be interrupted in the middle of it for just a few minutes. that's why you probably won't find a fix for it.
but if your keyboard have that windows key, which normaly is between CTRL and ALT keys, you press it, and windows start menu apears, giving you acess to the desktop... Normally, this works with some games that don't accept alt-tab combination.
If you have windows XP, maybe pressing Ctrt-alt-del will pop up the task manager.
But I don't know if deadly shadows will accept these alternatives.
Anyway, the best thing to do is find some time in which you can play without having to exit the game frequently. Play a level, in a time exclusively didicated for the game.
hope it works...

i just found the problem. my screen resolution and game resolution were both set at 1280 x 1024 and as a result alt + tab nor any other method would work
so i bumped the thief resolution down to 1024 x 768 and now it works

Strange...
The windows key is your friend, but also, in my case, my arch-enemy. I keep pressing it accidentally at a vital point, and BOOM! I quickly go back to realise that the keys don't work, so alt-tab, close the start menu, select the game, and I'm dead.
But, another fix is to use the little keys at the top of your keyboard (you may or may not have them, most modern keyboards have em) that are labled with web/home, back, forward, etc. The web or mail one usually works, and gives you something to alt-tab between, usually meaning it accepts the alt-tab.

hey cool i just found this in the readme file of thief 3
3. Using Alt-Tab functionality to minimize and return to the game may lead to instability.
a. Alt-Tab may cause the mouse to be non-functional within menus. Pressing Alt-Tab again sometimes corrects this behavior, but can also leads to further instability.
b. If your computer's desktop resolution is the same as the game's resolution, you will not be able to use Alt-Tab to switch between the game and the desktop. If the resolutions are different, you will be able to switch normally. Using Alt-Tab during the movie to switch to the desktop, shut down programs and then return to the movie will not necessarily help performance.
Please note: Using Alt-Tab combination is not supported.
