The sound "card" used seems to be an onboard chip named SiS 7012. One can conclude that from the line "Hardware ID: PCI\VEN_1039&DEV_7012&SUBSYS_A00C1019&REV_A0". It says that the chip's manufacturer (called PCI vendor in this case) is Silicon Integrated Systems (SiS) (vendor ID=1039). The device ID is 7012. Looking up both ID numbers in the Linux PCI ID Repository ((
http://pciids.sourceforge.net/)) reveals the sound chip to be a SiS 7012. It is commonly used in several SiS-manufactured mainboard chipsets, e.g. the SiS 745 or SiS 741 chipset.
However, this sound chip might be accompanied by an AC'97 sound codec, e.g. the C-Media CMI9739A. That's why drivers for a C-Media sound chip might work with the SiS 7012 as well; the mainboard manufacturer, however, might as well have SiS drivers available for download, and these will work with the sound chip(s) as well. Pretty confusing.
Unfortunately, I cannot play Thief 3 on any mainboard using the SiS 7012 (to recreate unconscious' situation and maybe get the same results), and I don't have any other ideas right now.

SiS audio card, that would make sense, considering most of our motherboards have either SiS GFX Cards built in, so it would only make sense for audio cards to be built in too.
Alas, it does confuse me a fair bit why only Thief 3 is effected, other games, such as Doom 3, Quake 4, Quake 3, Doom 1 & 2, Boiling Point, Battlefield 2, The Sims 2, The Sims, Caesar 4, Sim City 2/3/4, so on, all work PERFECTLY.

I have the same problem exactly. A year ago I ran Thief 3 on this computer, and it ran without any problems. Now there is no sound in the main menu and in the game. The problem is NOT in sound card, as mine could play Thief 3 sounds before.
My Windows system is the same, I didnt do anything to it - Windows XP SP2.
I also tried exiting all unnecessary applications - still no sound. This problem only occurs when I run Thief 3 - all other game and applications are OK.
Any ideas how to fix it?

Yeah use another audio card.

Yeah use another audio card.
 The audio card itself doesn't seem to be the problem here, so this might not be very helpful.

First since he has posted a DXDIAG log, he is not using linux.
Windows is a bitch with cards that have bad or broken drivers.

Finally I managed to slolve this problem. I did exactly two things, and after doing this the sound was playing OK. Dunno which one actually helped.
1. Installing the latest version of DirectX avaible.
2. Shutting down NOD32 antivirus program, which conflicts with Thief 3 somehow.

I also have the same problem here.No sound in gameplay or menu. I know I played the game before with same PC with no problems. DirectX 9.0c is installed. I guess NOD32 is the problem here. What to do about it?

There are different versions of DirectX 9.0c. I know it sounds weird, but download the latest one. It should be from April.
You could try shutting down NOD32 first, but you'll need to upgrade DX9 for some games anyway.

Well my problem is solved for now but I don't know if it will work always.I turned nod32 off after windows started, opened game and I have sound. Now I will install diffuclty patch and see what will happen
