NOw that it's been a number of years since, Am I the only one that was a little disappointed with the overall Thief 3 experience?
There were some parts of it I liked, but the overall experience just seemed a little boring. The cradle, yes the cradle was intense and scary. But most of the city missions just seemed a little boring. TDP and TMA there was this looming intensity going on but TDS it seemed to be missing it. Kinda felt like I was playing oblivion. The guards didn't seem "as alive".
The sounds and physics just seemed off. Blackjacking in TDP and TMA seemed more satifying especially. THe reactions and sound of it all just seemed to worik. BJing in TDS seemed just off. THe sounds never seemed to match what was happening and the ragdoll physics just made the people seem fake.
Every time I try to go in and play it again, I can't get very far. I start to nod off sometimes.

No you weren't the only one, but there are MANY threads going off in TDS or trying to praise it, or angry or perplexed at the "hate". Really, a LOT of them. :erm:

I only got into Thief recently, and had trouble getting into Deadly Shadows. I was really disappointed most of the cutscenes were really ugly in-game 3d, and the few that were more traditionally animated didn't retain the lovely style of the Looking Glass ones. Beyond that I hated the player physics, it was hard to get oriented in the world, and getting stuck on the geometry happened way too often. The actual story took a really big step back, it's presented really poorly and has these awful characters interactions that feel like they're straight from a children's cartoon with how they're over acted. I really agree with you about the physics, things just felt floaty, lacking in precision and like the game world wasn't exactly solid. I didn't even finish the game, because it failed to hold my interest. Only got as far as the cradle, beat that and I think the mission following before I decided the story was too stupid for my own good, and dropped it.

I enjoyed the game for what it was, and I thought the story was "okay", but it certainly didn't have the same "save the world, because serious shit is at stake" feel that TDP and TMA had. It had a more X-File-ish "monster-of-the-week" thing going on. That might be missing the point though. TDP and TMA both dealt with the shift of power between chaos and order, as represented by the Pagans and Mechanists, respectively. The Keepers were there to maintain a balance, knowing that people would suffer if either should gain control. Now the Keepers themselves are out of balance and it's only when Garret accepts his fate as the True Keeper that balance is again restored. I think it's sublime story-telling and the perfect way to wrap up the trilogy (storywise). The gameplay itself does not match up to the two previous games, but it's still a decent enough game. I think the worst thing about the game is the physics.

Yes, physics is awkward. But you've missed terrible and boring city sections, frequent loading zones, terrible engine-based cutscenes (looking much worse than the game itself), lack of comments of Garret on the missions (important part of his personality built through the previous titles), and lack of balance in your equipment (unlimited shopping).

I liked Deadly Shadows more than The Metal Age because I prefer its ambient sound, art design and overall atmosphere. Of course DS has got its share of problems, but they weren't anything game-breaking for me. Controlling Garrett with a mouse + keyboard can be somewhat a pain in this game, but then I plugged in the Dual Shock 3 controller, and after that it was OK :p . I was alright with there being no rope arrows, and the levels being divided into small sections didn't bother me much. The only time I got kinda offended was when I tried jumping into the water :p ...

That's weird. I remember him commenting a lot actually :p .

Not surprising.

Not at all. I think I read somewhere around here that DS was developed mostly with the Xbox in mind. Which shows, I guess.

That's right. That's why we have levels splitted in two and frequent loading zones in city hub; because Xbox had some serious hardware limitations. I don't know if you had played in T1 or T2 before TDS, Yamatotakeru. T3 simply lacks of this unique magic and world integrity known from T1 and T2 but it is still likable game, I guess.

I played T1 and 2 first :) (my favorite is Thief:Gold). I believe that most of T: DS's faults everyone mentioned above are completely legit. It's not a great game, especially gameplaywise. It's just that I like it for some reasons and enjoyed it despite its flaws. I actually felt that unique magic and weirdness of T1&2 and that was enough for me to not care about its shortcomings.
T: DS wasn't an amazing closure to Garrett's story, but I was satisfied.
