Is it possible to have no framerate problems in Thief 3?
With my 9800 Pro, it runs at a steady 20fps, and occasionally gets smooth (occasionally gets choppy, too).
On a friend's X850 Pro, it runs at maybe 30fps.
Does anyone have it running at a solid 60 frames per second?

solid as rock on my radeon9800pro.but T3 engine IS somewhat..unsmooth.
..avoid radeon92x0 series, especially SE (sh!tty edition).I would also avoid the geforce FX series (half-a$$ed dx9 implementation, very slow shaders).
go for radeon9550-9800 (again, avoid SE!),those are very good and cheap dx9 cards and should run like butter.nvidia gf4200 is only a dx8.1 card, that means you wont have full quality in many games (including T3,if memory serves).go for gf6600 or 6600gt if you want a nvidia card, thea are good and cheap as well (avoid some low cost 6600s,as they have only 64-bit memory)..

The card I've ordered is an XFX Geforce FX5200 128MB AGP8X, and it supports DX9 - it'll do until I get my fab new games machine. :D Speaking of which ... what card would you recommend, if money was no object?

You've wasted your money. The FX 5200 is a useless POS that will run TDS at about 12 - 15 FPS if you're lucky.

Well, I haven't wasted much money, and at least I'll be able to play Myst 4, which I've had for a year in its box, even if the FX5200 is no good for Thief. Oh, and it's better than the crappy SiS 305 that I've got at the moment!

Now that I've finally installed drivers that work OK, I find that Thief 3 runs very smoothly, despite the "useless POS" of a graphics card that I wasted my money on!:p

Well, OK. I hope you don't fry eggs on this VideoCard

I guess your definition of "smooth" is different from mine.
Still, if it's good enough for you then that's OK.

Yes, 5200 will run Thief okay on lower settings (800x600 or 640x480, no AA, medium details), I did it both on a desktop and a laptop.
