Not really. You could make a great Thief game without Garrett, in a similar vein to how DXHR was a strong title without JC Denton.

Yeah, you could. But, we're talking Thief 4 here, and everyone assumes Stephen Russell will be back as Garrett. The joke will be on us if he isn't.

I'm assuming the girl from the end of TDS will be the protagonist. Garrett's story arc has come to an end, surely.

"Online functionality" could mean anything at this stage such as achievements or multiplayer, so I wouldn't be too worried about it yet.
I'm just thrilled that the game is still kicking and that they are trying to make it a high quality title, building off the success of DXHR. That game was quite different to the original but still felt like a DX game.
