@Dia: No quotation marks in the article? Years of games journalism should have taught us that if it's not a developer quote or a hands-on statement, it has absolutely no value.
@wdog: I think you're right. We know that EM are working on a third unannounced title, so it might very well be that "first Unreal 4 game". EM showcasing UE4 sounds perfectly plausible. But then, depending on how far into development hell the studio has delved, they could have switched to UE4 for thiaf too.
And who knows, maybe the silence is not a sign of development hell after all (though the turnover highly suggests so), but instead contractual silence so as not to reveal that thiaf would be a next-gen console launch title using UE4. Again, who knows. A UE4 launch at the end of 2013 works with such a scenario.

I was wide awake earlier this morning, couldn't sleep, while I was cruising the forums, I had a great idea for Thief. Too bad the new protagonist can't go back in time, to original Thief, of course the newer engine. Oh look there is a craymen. She has to find clues from the past to be used in the future. I could dig that. Talk about nostalgia. Wishful thinking. :(

Not really. You could make a great Thief game without Garrett, in a similar vein to how DXHR was a strong title without JC Denton.
Although nobody really remembers the sort of character JC was. He was written to be as captivating as a tour guide in a box factory. It's what the player does, that makes the character.
Garrett though, is a little different. The player is free to move every bone in that guy's body, but the motivations and subtext are all deep within his head. You built up your knowledge of Garrett through his dialogue. You build JC Denton up through his/your actions.
I personally have no real motivation for Thiaf. If I thought Thief 3 was a horrible game that lost the mood, feel and playability of the first 2 games, then I'll really have no conviction towards the probable console gamer title this 4th one will be. Much like what the 3rd one was.

Yeh, my wording there is a bit vague. But my connection was lagging so I couldn't quite edit it. I'm one for posting fast.
I meant to say that from what little character background we get of JC, there isn't much to build a complete character. Hence, the character that people would conjur of him is itself very incomplete. He's dull when he speaks, so we imagine emotions in the subtext from actions we carry out in the game.
Does that make a little more sense? He's a slate for the players' emotions and and actions in the game's world, basically. Garrett's character is built more strongly, but at a more sluggish pace. We know his convictions and we know his usual mood towards those around him. The character he is, is hinted at, rather than us building him.

Thief 4 might not be like its predecessors since the studio is taking a different approach here and the game will also have an online functionality."
Ooooh, hope it's co-op. Maybe with one player as Garrett, and the other as the girl from the end of TDS. That would introduce the opportunity for a lot of challenges we haven't seen in stealth games before. Like having to syncronize the takedowns of two guards who are in sight of eachother so neither can raise the alarm. Or having one player lure guards away from their post so player 2 can sneak in and get the loot. There's a lot of potential there and after DXHR I have faith that Eidos Montreal will make the most of the IP they've been bestowed.

LOL. Gold.
A coop mode would be cool, I agree.

Haha, I remember a tour we had of a box factory once. The different machines were actually labeled, and my favorite one -- I remember it to this day -- was the Box Erector. Just something very funny about the idea of that machine I still laugh at.
I would be happy with coop. That would make it stand out from the pack as one to keep coming back to. Now if only there were an editor so we could make coop & competitive maps to really take advantage of it...

He was the original tour guide, but sounded less thrilled about his job.
