I was about to vote neutral, because after all we don't know much about thiaf so there's nothing to think about. But now that I saw takedowns mentionned, I'm starting to worry...

I am neutral, since even after all that time, we still know almost nothing about THI4F. :p When I know more, I will form an opinion and all that. It's very unlikely to be like the first two games, so I am not hoping for a completely f4ithful sequel, but who knows, it may be good in other ways.
Also, what me worry as long as I've got FMs to play?

"keyframe animations for takedowns"...What a terrible 3rd anniversary gift...
We always feared this possibility...So much good work, yet apparently all a waste...:(

Seems like being a Thief fan means being left in the dark. Out of sight, out of mind. what does it matter though, it's a new company that implements gameplay disparaging elements that works in another title (deus ex) & have the deluding mismanaging idea that it'll work in Thief whereas of course we know, it would only make it look stupid. how would they justify their work ethic. "we're a new company, we made a hardcore deus ex title a casual phenomena cash cow. just wait another 3 years & we'll release that trailer & mass market everything, how much money we make will justify this 'cult' fans distastefulness, so it ain't our problem." it would be as if nothing happened, see no evil, hear no evil. it could potentially go this route but who knows just yet.. the wider audience don't know who ttlg are & don't give a damn about their original base. they may feels it's important for them to understand that.
If only they could make it a custom option for configuring takedown animations, being that it becomes possible to look like animations happening in realtime (difficult setting without the silliness), first person, as opposed to 'forced' slow-mo 3rd person short movie nonsense, which the casual gamers can't help but love (newbie setting).. this way everyone wins.
I like the idea of slow-mo-guaranteed-killcam event immersing the newbie player, only for him to notice he's just pissed off a guard due to his clumsy inept weaponry usage & idealogy to think killing makes everything so right for their style of play, the difficulty gets raised to 'medium' somewhat? .. I think i'm overthinking it but whatever. Thief was pretty much like that, guards were stronger & called for guards to make your experience a living hell. I'd hope they'd make a better system as opposed to giving guards more life, adding more potions, guard alert parameters increased, conventional boring stuff they'd simply hire someone qualified to do the job.
On a side note, one 'unchanged' difficulty option with tweaked gameplay intricacies for ghosters, whom i feel shouldn't be completely ignored. Thief isn't an arcade fps racing game but why shouldn't it be for something, I think time trials should be unlockable after completing the game. the moronic thing would be personal sense of accomplishments wouldn't mean much to others when there's a bunch of morons out there cheating to compare one anothers 'steam achievements' with each other.
My only hope is that these takedown animations are NOT deus ex like takedowns.. and are actual animation programming for guards deaths for a variety of weapons, if you shoot a guard in the neck with an arrow I wanna hear him choking & coughing blood as he slumps to his death & cements himself in his own pool of blood.. NOT a flying ragdoll. ragdolls I absolutely hate moreso than deus-ex.. the definition of deus-ex takedowns however grant me no real hope in this guys CV so i don't really care what they do with it.
wow i write too much wall of text.

The gameplay is either going to be more or less driven by shadows and the light gem, like the previous three titles, or not. If they do still use shadows/light gem to drive the gameplay, there may be a small fragment of hope. Because that was kinda the intial thrill and unique thing about Thief at the time. It was as good as black and white. Period. When you are in shadows and your gem is black, you are good. Plenty of time to absorb and enjoy your surroundings. Its simple, and pure, and powerful. Will the next Thief game merely use the more subtle mechanics of stealth, that all the other wouldbe stealth games have used? Or will it still be shadows/gem. That scares me personally more than a modern setting! It wouldnt be Thief anymore. It would really be every other game this time. Oh dear GOD! However, since I dont like speculation, I guess I am neutral.

Takedowns and Finishers, on top of all the other key words and echoes of pre-release hints of design philosophy for DX3, ensure I am worried, but again, mostly for the forums. No new computer and Internet connection will matter if the game is contaminated with particular modern gaming design tropes that guarantee I cannot enjoy the game, regardless of how "great" a game it is as a game. If you've enjoyed, especially relished, official gaming in general for the last 10-11 years, then you are not going to be able to address the concerns in any way that helps, and certainly not with words, or anything posted on a discussion board.

jtr, when this next Thief game comes out, I will be nowhere near capable of playing it. For me, it will be waiting for those first videos to be put up on youtube. Dont feel bad for me though, my computer can still play any game from 2001 and earlier quite well. Since that is where all the real games are, Im good. lol
