If it was set in a future of the Thief world (as opposed to the future of our world) I think it could work. High technology versus primal magic is of course at the centre of Thief, and could translate into a steampunk future fantasy quite well.
Perhaps if the authors of such a game didn't call it Thief it might work. As far as I'm concerned, the time period in which Thief world is set creates the ambience which has made Thief so appealing to so many. If 'they' tried to modernize it, claiming it takes place in the future of the Thief world, it could come off resembling something akin to Star Wars or as NH said, something trying to emulate Splinter Cell. Imho, it just wouldn't be Thief anymore. I also think that part of Thief's charm lies in the fact that no projectile weapons are used. Throw in some high-tech weapons and you end up with just a plain shooter-type game. Not that there's anything wrong with shooters, but as I said, it just wouldn't be Thief.
I agree that the concept art makes Garrett look like a common thug. Where's the fun in that?

I think it's just blending in. I'd expect him to be scruffier though,. Like Bubbles in The Wire :p

Has there been any talk of when the game is (presuming it is going to be made) to be set? I loved the steampunk setting- plus, in modern times your gonna get caught whatever you do anyway.
If they are to make thief 4, just focus on what works! Never mind trying to attract the mainstream. And keep it on PC so we dont get odd jerky movements because of the way its been ported :@!

Actually why not, I like that concept. This is how would, with high probablility, Garrett look if he lived and operated today. Although he looks a bit like a rapist.
I mean rapper.

Just to clarify, this art is from a canceled ION Storm game, not the hinted/rumored "T" game in development now.

I see, well, I'm from the "BETER NO THIEF 4 KTHXBYE" club, so I don't care much what was that supposed to be for. :)

If we still overanalise today a single drawing from a concept that is no longer in development imagine when Eidos Montreal releases their first image teaser...
We´re going to analyse every single pixel of it. And I´m afraid that even if they manage to show a Mona Lisa of stealth art some of us will still have stronger reactions than the Fallout or Diablo fans. :laff:

That's bookmark-worthy, Gambit. For when that day comes, I mean.

Every time I see it, I can't help but feel they totally didn't understand the premise of the game. This just isn't Thief, this is Thug.
I agree; that drawing of "futuristic Garrett" posted by Digital Nightfall smacks of Grand Theft Auto. It totally clashes with the themes and motifs of the first three Thief games. No thank you!

First time seeing this. Very interesting.
It can be taken to a whole new level.
