I believe if Paul Weir can create audio in the spirit of the previous Thief games - that peculiar mixture of harder industrial beats and subtle strangeness, the effects that made the games (especially the first) feel so unreal - his work will be successful. I think TDP was the best at creating an interesting contrast between harder and softer tones; in contrast, TMA and TDS went further and further towards refinement, which I think didn't do the game good. It is interesting how the same harshness got lost in the transition from Deus Ex 1 and Deus Ex 2, or various Unreal titles. Game music in general has become blander over the years, an evolution from peculiar and individualistic towards "cinematic" and generic, and it would be nice to see (okay, hear ;))the opposite for a change.
Anyway, looking forward to what he can do; since I have no high expectations for Thief IV, I may be pleasantly surprised in the end. :)

Moving on....
I'm looking forward to seeing the first real news about T4. I have my reservations since it's being targeted as a AAA title, but I sincerely hope Eidos Montreal can knock this one out of the ball park.

This thread is a reminder of why I deliberately extricated myself from Thief 4 information and debate after its announcement. Sometimes you guys make Trekkies hardcore to the point of caricature look universally cool.
Paul, if you're still following this thread:
I'm just wondering if you're able to share how you came to this responsibility with Thief 4. Did you actively seek the job or did Eidos find and seek you for the position? I'm sure any kind of story you can share about this process would interest everyone here. :thumb:

To Paul Weir, well done on getting the job! To add to what others have said, the sound in Thief is rather special. I remember being a little confused when I watched an interview with Eric Brosius where he said that Thief2 wasn't about changing the nature of sound in Thief (i.e. no disco tracks). Of course, disco tracks weren't present, but some of the music in Thief1 certainly doesn't seem like it should work in the setting, and yet it worked beautifully.
Now, this isn't to say that one particular approach is better than another, and each project should be judged on whatever unique challenges and opportunities present themselves.
I guess all I'm trying to say is don't be afraid to step outside of the current accepted wisdom in audio design these days. Be daring, create something memorable. I know that I for one am looking forward to what you can contribute.

As regards Thief 4 I swing between hope and fear.
And for the first time, listening to Guv_P's work I feel faint stirrings of excitement.
I also feel impressed that he felt it important enough to recognise and acknowledge this community.

The powers that be have heard & answered. I am cleaning up this thread. In addition, anymore off topic posts will be removed.
For those who have forgotten, this is supposed to be a thread about the new Thief 4 Audio Director, Paul Weir.

Thank you. :thumb:
Just what we needed. :D

Since my post got deleted instead of edited, I'll just repeat what I said then:
Paul, I think you're the right man for the job, and hope to hear much more from you here! Show us taffers that Eric Brosius isn't the only sound genius! :thumb:

Thanks for the vote of confidence guys. It's slightly intimidating working on a project with such obsessive fans but I am listening.

Seriously, there is absolutely nothing to worry about. The first two Thief titles were of such high calibre that the established fanbase was of a more, rabid nature. As someone pointed out earlier in the thread, we may be fanatical about our love of the Thief series, but once you get used to us you will never find a tighter more decent gathering of fans. Just showing up here and communicating so candidly secures your place in our history. I just hope that above all, you feel free to do whatever *you* want with the sound in the next title. That means no constraints from the fans or the business end. Either way dude, you are the "new sound guy". Revel in it, my friend! :ebil:
