Tone poetry...
Minimalist, not orchestrated, mixed on the fly by where the player is in the environment, tension-sustaining throbs with chord strikes as the player passes through a door from a dark small space into a lit corridor, vulnerability, claustrophobia, utter loneliness, the frightening Hammer-pounding and wordless Gregorian-chanting with reversed prayers floating over the top, the signs of life unseen of people in bars and then creakings and croakings and clickings and chirruppings and moanings and wooden groanings...:D Almost everything sounds threatening, with blessed relative silence that still sounds cold. Mechanical clatterings, clackings, switching, buzzing, crackling, threats of electrocution or losing a finger to the pinch of well-made machinery that is built to last, heavier and larger than necessary, but outliving its creators. Wax cylinders spinning on precise clockwork difference engines. Almost everything sounds ponderous, heavy, oppressive, unstoppable, thick, and not at all fragile. Most of where Garrett goes, he's not supposed to be there, he's not to be seen, not to be heard, and what is benign to the rightful inhabitants is a threat to himself, were it not for his skills, which he must not be lax or cocky about. Volcanism, unwelcoming fauna and even just as dangerous flora, gaseous, steaming, emission of questionable vapors. Thick and meaty and wet and bloody hot. Boiling, roiling, running, trickling, greasy, oily, viscous. Too open, too closed-in. Cool, damp, freezing, shattering. Decaying, mouldering, cracking apart, tumbling. Fungus, moss, spongy, squishy. Unearthly glows, ignis fatuous, sentient rocks, sentient plants, light emission through unknown means, fires and ghost fires and fires that shouldn't burn without fuel. Phosphorescence and bioluminescence and sickly warm greens. Undeath, necromancy, hauntings, ghostly voices, telepathic messages from the plants and rocks and malicious spirits. Reversed vocals and reversed reverb and plate reverb... Heavy stone on bedrock, blocks, bricks, chains, creaking ropes, sick laughter...
But anyway, obviously the game itself and the concept art will inform the sound choices a great deal alone without other verbal/textual instructions from EM, and there are too many factors unknown about the setting and pretty much everything, so we only have the original games to go by.

:o Gosh!
Well, since EM's aware of this thread, the article, who's done what, and the posts over at Eidos that led to this, I take it the Guv' has been in contact with EM about this, and his continued logging in and posting is deemed acceptable? :D
Coolness.

Thanks for stopping by, Paul. :thumb:
Listening to the demos on your website, it's clear that you're up to the task. Instead of feeling the pressure of expectations, this job is probably a brilliant opportunity to get really creative with fantastic and strange otherworldly atmospherics.
If I was in your shoes, I'd really relish going crazy on this one. :D
