No. Eidos Montreal knows better than to chop the whole point of the game to pieces. I doubt they are so willing to alienate the franchise's core following. Bear in mind that The Dark Mod is a Doom III modification, meaning it gets a lot of attention from empty-headed ten-year-old horror obsessives. I'm not saying Doom (and horror in general) is only for empty-headed ten-year-old horror-obsessive kids (holy hyphen, Batman!), but it draws way more attention from them than an old, dull, grungy franchise like Thief does.
On that note, I really hate—hate, hate, HATE!—companies who would rather butcher a beloved franchise with new concepts than just name the game something else. If Eidos is doing this with Thief, shame on them for their laziness.

However EM has a chance here to flex themselves and really show off something incredible; with careful press releases and teasers and screenshots they can really pull in the old crowd (by displaying the things that made thief great to begin with) and attract a whole new generation (by proving countless slaughtering does not make a great game and reinvigorating the first person sneaker genre). Thief is an incredible concept that just needs the monetary support to prove itself as a real contender in the business and to prove itself transcendent to just being "a video game". EM has the ability to do just that (they have proven themselves competent managers, programmers, artists, and gaming enthusiasts) but they MUST take their time and meticulously calculate every step.

Oh I don't disagree with anything that you said. I'm not opposed to chance specifically.

See, I doubt that too, but it's only a
doubt. I'm not
convinced they aren't. Like I wrote earlier tonight (which I guess you read, judging by your wording):

I also know for a fact that EM does respect us, the Thief fans. But do you think that the alienation of the core fanbase of previous titles in a franchise would prevent a successor title from becoming a huge seller? Or even a good seller? If not, do you think Eidos would insist on keeping the artistic integrity over cashing in?
...and that's where I'm in doubt and need reassurance. :erg:
What Reliance wrote helped somewhat, though. Thanks, bud.

Good point. Except Doom is way older than Thief (except TDS being three months older than D³), and should by rights also be duller and grungier. What do you think that signifies?

Well, none of us can provide any real reassurance for you yet. We will just have to wait and see. As for Thief versus Doom, by dull and grungy I meant not flashy in terms of play. In Doom you're gunning down exotic, terrifying aliens. Thief is more subtle and probably more bland to the kid audience we've been discussing.

Garrett has always been influenced by the ninjas of Japan, let's just go with the flow and allow EM to do their thing in updating the franchise for new fans, machine gun arrows and shurikens are the first part then once we get our Mirror's Edge style parkour going along with Splinter Cell type scissor kicking and climbing, we're really just allowing this to reach its logical conclusion and then when Garrett travels back through time with the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, we'll experience a whole new cross-franchise fanbase.
This place is going to be FUN for the next year.

cool "Prince of Persia/Ninja/acrobatic" moves ... sounds exactly like the kind of thing a company that wants "to introduce this classic franchise to new fans" by bringing "a fresh look and a fresh approach" might consider.
What 'e said.
I'm not so sure why every one is sure they aren't going to do this. Imagine yourself in the devs shoes, trying to convince someone else to give you money for this:
"So, dev, tell me ... how are you going to make sure that gamers want to be this Garrett chap?"
What would you say? Why
do you want to be Garrett? How would you describe that feeling to others? How would you convince others you could successfully get that feeling accross to "new fans"? How would you convince other that the feeling can be can successfully advertised? These are genuine questions btw, because I don't know what
I'd say if I was in their shoes.
On the other hand, the Prince is an obvious prototype succeeding in the market right now.

What hapens if the game will be worse than TDS will ou buy it?
When compared to thief 2, TDS let me down. When compared to all other games, I think its a decent game.
I'll be buying Thi4f* regardless I'm pretty sure.
* As long as the logo isnt in l33tspeak.

oh noes!!!!1 the 4 in thi4f is going to ruin everything!!!!! :o ok! that's it! I won't buy thi4f regardless of the fact we don't know anything about the game yet! But still! I will judge the game solely on this alone! it's all your fault EM! You just had to put the 4 in there :tsktsk:

So aside from the OBVIOUS fact that they are far away from shipping, chances are that it will go thru many, many changes from how EM currently thinks the game will end up and how it does end up.
Something tells me we're in for a rough couple years. Lots of emotional ups & downs before T4 hits the shelves.
Valium, anyone???
