I think TDS had the best examples of Thiefy style... unfortunately this only occured in a few places, as much of TDS was restricted by console limitations. If you focus on a wall, or a character, or individual objects, you get a nice sense of Thief. The style is fairly consistant through out.
If T4 manages to take the style of TDS, possibly add in some technological advancements that make sense, but do not appear too advanced and out of place, expand it all to the scope and size worthy of a Thief game, then they will nail it square on the head.
I'm not really expecting exactly that, of course, but I hope they can come close.

I guess someone could make a worthy successor campaign to T1 and T2 on the dark mod, would probably be better than what we're going to get with commercial T4.
