As long as it never feels like parkour, gymnastics, martial arts, or acrobatics... Keep Garrett vulnerable and not powered up.

I played a mod for oblivion called Thieves aresenal. Make it a free roaming world, where you can be chased on horseback and whatnot. Oblivithief was an amazing experience if you modded oblivion enough.

Co-op. Even if it isn't tied into the main story line. It would be fun to have a "mission" mode where you and a buddy could do a mission together.
Perhaps even a dual storyline for each character. Garrett and the Apprentice. Some missions would intertwine.
Maybe even a versus mode? Cops and robbers ordeal?
Cops objective: "prevent thieves from stealing prized trinkets"
Thieves objective: "Steal all prized trinkets in the given amount of time"

Two games in one, then?
Tall order, you know, double the work. Plus one will taint the other. I only address it 'cause you said it was the ONE mandatory thing. :cheeky:

Cops objective: Run around aimlessly around the premises to find thives that you now are there because it's a multiplayer game. Wave your sword at every shadow to see if a player is hiding there. Your work as a guard consist mainly of sitting in a corner, waiting in hiding for a thief to come and try to steal a trinket. You never walk using a specific guarding route because every single night you're at work, there has to be a thief trying to steal stuff.

I think co-op would work well as a Player-vs-Environment feature (two thieves break into a mansion together). I don't think Player-vs-Player would work so well, because the guard player would already know for sure that a thief player is in the building.

One mandatory thing: Burrick sex.

It would be interesting to observe their mating habits.
